Tactical Buffalo Rifle

Post by Glen Ring »

I am VERY hard to impress ..very hard..But I witnessed some shooting this weekend that gave me new respect for a few BPCR shooters.

We had a side match at our regional this weekend. I placed a Green, full sized chicken in front of black full sized Pigs at 300 meters.
The pig had taken the chicken hostage and it was up to the shooters to Kill the pig and not touch the chicken..in three minutes using three rounds max.
Shooters started several feet behind the line standing with just their rifles and ammo... until I yelled GO!!
Several shooters killed the pig on their very first shot..and a few had iron sights. Impressive indeed.
We had three rounds and when the smoke cleared there was only one that killed the pig every time without killing a chicken... Rick Hladky.
I have seen good shooting my entire life , but these guys IMPRESSED me.
The last side match was a 1/10 size pig ( air rifle pig, a little larger than a quarter) sitting on top of a stake at 200 meters ! Kevin Griggs turned his on the second shot but it stayed on the stake. Mr. Sterling whacked his ..with IRON SIGHTS !!
I really enjoyed this match. From my perspective as a competitor , there was a LOT of food , the weather was good and a lot of laughter.
From a match director's perspective , this was a dream match. Competitors were thankful, offered us help, were VERY mannerly and helped each other.
Two guns broke and folks scrambled to find parts and someone to install them.

We have had several years experience in putting on matches, from our small local matches to Jeanne's experience at the nationals...but this was our FIRST BPCR Regional at the OKC Gun club. I enjoyed this match more than any I have worked or shot at in the last 10 years.

Oh, I don't know who won what ..I was having such a good time. Jeanne will make a post later with scores and Pictures.

I might be able to see a quarter at 50 yds if there was good light and it was shiny and the tide was out in Oklahoma. Sounds like a blast though.

I had painted the small targets florescent chartreuse and had them sitting on a 2 foot steel rod painted white. The iron sight guys just aimed for the top of the rod. Even at 200 meters those small targets jump when hit with a 22.
