Paper Patch Chamber

Post by J.Murphy »

I am interested in shooting paper patch, but could not find through the search engine, a description of what constitutes a paper patch chamber versus a grease groove chamber, if there is any great difference. Any help would be appreciated.

J.Murphy,
There are a million opinions of what makes a paper patch chamber different than a grease groove, but basically, the effects are tiny at best. If there is one somewhat unifying notion, it is that paper patch chambers for target bullets are very tight - often too tight for grease groove bullets to chamber. But paper patches in a standard chamber intended for groove+ diameter grease groove bullets, will shoot paper patches very well.

Bottom line is that whatever chamber you have, is good enough for paper patching. Go for it!

You can shoot bore diameter and groove diameter PP bullets they both shoot well but you will loose powder capacity shooting a groove diameter and this can get to be an issue with small capacity cases when you get to longer ranges.
I like tight chambers and longer funnel types of leads. It's a personal choice.

BUT, you do not need to lose case capacity with a GG bullet IF it is a two diameter design
as the base band/ bands can be fire formed case/"groove" diameter and the front bands can be bore diameter and
so they can be seated way out.

That being said, do not forget about the DDEPP/ two diameter PP bullets that work very well in std GG chambers.
Same deal short Base band "patch to fireformed case I.D./freebore/groove dia
and body at "patch to bore/lands" diameter. typically seat way out with only maybe 0.1-0.125" into the case
similarly to the dedicated tight neck chamber to use straight sided patch to bore bullets.
Nice about the std chamber: can shoot BOTH the 2 diameter GG and the 2 diameter PP bullets Well.

Oh, there are a number of 40 and 45 caliber DDEPP/two diameter PP bullet molds
listed, described and illustrated in the Buffalo Arms Catalog.
