stock finish

OK. I have LOTS of experience with wood , restocking , and finishing. I was an antique gunsmith for years. still do it for fun.
BUT. Now I live in Florida. where we make HEAT and ship it all over the world.
when I go to the range with my Shiloh the heat and humidity make the stock slippery.
I don't want to have it checkered, XXX wood..
I've tried gunstock wax, linseed oil, etc, but it still gets kind of slippery.

any ideas? and do any of you use the Shiloh finish they sell?

I've used both Johnsons Floor Paste Wax and Min Wax. They are about the same but I think the Johnsons would be worth a try for you.

Kenny, I use a wax that I buy from www.vintagegunscopes.com. Look under their cleaning tab. It does not leave a residue. Protects the wood and the metal.

Renascence wax is expensive but I like it after the finish is good and dried as a protective coating for wood or steel.

Give it a coat of Daly's Seafin Teak Oil, the stocks I've finished with it have a nice grip to them, no checkering. I like to add a bit of alkanet root powder to add a slight reddish tint. I have been applying this over the finish of my Sharps replicas.

I do have museum wax. I'll try that for everyday use. good advice...thanks....
linseed oil rub with rottenstone leaves it sticky in the heat. guess I'll try wax now...

just shooting from the hip, but I would say that when Shiloh made your stock and finished it they wet sanded it with oil, filling any and all pores. that would make it super smooth??? I would say other than dragging 80 grit over it... have a towel handy.

An oil finish should 't be slippery, even when hot. Of course, I don't live in Florida. All my stocks are alkanet finished, never had any issues.

You can buy a spray that is used on lawn bowls to stop hands from slipping. Vic

Stop sweating so much Kenny! Easy for me in the Pacific Northwest. Seriously though, I think the stock gun wax is the way to go.

You don't want to checker the stock because it's high grade wood? Every high end custom gunsmith in the world is scratching his head over that one. Also, have you ever seen an original Sharps with a pistol grip that wasn't checkered?

I'll just use some stock wax and wipe.

It is my opinion that chequering would only make that stock look better. I truly don't think it would take away from that lovely figure.
