405 Winchester
I sometimes see Good single shot rifles for sale in 405 Winchester. I must confess, I know nothing about the cartridge and don't know anyone that owns one to ask.
I do know brass is hard to locate, and doubt it would be a legal BPCR round to use in silhouette.\
Do any of you own and shoot a 405?

Re: 405 Winchester
glen,
i have one with a 13 twist barrel
loading pp bullets developed over time over around 85 gns of swiss 1.5 or 1f it can compete in the wind out to 1000 yds with 45 cals.
if i did it again i might experiment with a 12 twist.
recoil is less tha the 45 cal for the same performance.

Thanks Bruce...I'm not sure that cartridge is legal here for BPCR Silhouette. What diameter bullet are you shooting?

Re: 405 Winchester
patched to 0.400" with seth cole 55w or similar.
the case is basically the same as 40/72 other than rim dimensions, so that is what i call it.
i understand this is a contentious issue in certain circles.
some call it gaming, but i believe what i do is in the spirit of true black powder shooting.
the only advantage i gain is to actually get brass.
i believe hornady has now stopped making it, which is a great pity.

my reamer has a 7 degree transition, so is more in tune with tradition than modern 45 degree transitions now commonly seen.
barrel is 0.400/0.408, unlike 405 which is bigger.

Re: 405 Winchester
Bruce,
Your 40-72 IS a 40-72 , particularly with the 0.400/0.408 barrel.
You are simply using available(used to be) 405Win brass.
No different than people using stretched , 30-40 Krag brass in their "40-70 Sharps Straight"
my 40-72 is indeed a 12 twist.
truthfully, I sometimes think I went too fast with the twist and corresponding 1.55" bullet. It is a challenge
to handle what with the Torque. So far, I have shot better at Long Range with my 16 twist 40-65 than I have with the 40-72
I need to get back to it as I now have a DDEPP bullet for it. I have neglected it since I Love my 40-65 and now have a new "sweety", a 38-50 Rem Hep

Re: 405 Winchester
dad just picked up a 40-70 and it uses 405win brass, its super hard to come by gotta keep an eye peeled at the gun shows!!!! not sure what the demise of the 405 was? It sure looks like it would be a good hunting/steel gun.

Good info from all. I guess that makes a lot of sense on the brass issue.

Re: 405 Winchester
It is a good hunting round and accurate, but a 300 gr bullet at 2300 fps + is not a particularly comfortable rifle to fire, especially in the 7 lb Winchester 95. It's reintroduction 20 years ago was met with resounding enthusiasm. The selection of good jacketed bullets was slim, and after a few years everybody pretty much had one that wanted one, and so sales dropped drastically. Cast bullets at 17-1800 fps are good fun also. Case life is very good, so the need to keep on producing brass was displaced by the turn to more modern cartridges. Hornady was about the only player in town, Jamison did a couple of runs, and with enough searching around can still be found, but 40-70 shooters snapped up most of what was still available.bpcr shooter wrote: ↑Thu Dec 10, 2020 5:56 pm dad just picked up a 40-70 and it uses 405win brass, its super hard to come by gotta keep an eye peeled at the gun shows!!!! not sure what the demise of the 405 was?
