spring fun

Post by bpcr shooter »

Got to get out of work early today, so I decided to take a trip up to the range and let a few fly. had the typical changing winds Lodi always has but, with no spotter or wind flags I think it was a great afternoon!! One thing....the man silhouette's are getting hard to see at 950yds!! guess Im getting old!

Matt,

The range looks good! I'm looking forward to being there in a week and a half. I hope it's a bit warmer than it has been the first 3 weeks of April, at least up here. It's been in the 20s most mornings with a bitter northwest wind more days than not. A little warmer would be nice. Either way I'll be there.

Thanks for the pictures!

looks pretty good to me Matt. It looks like you put some good hits on that feller.

I hope to get to the range tomorrow, snow flurries today so I made some alloy. Hope to get to use it this summer.

Good shooting. I have found the yards are getting longer after 60 years of age.

V2 Polecat. My scope is a bit heavy for it, so I had to make a bracket to bring some of the weight back but other than that it works very well. I was told by some Palma shooters, you can get the cheaper ones that Creemoore sports sells and in a few years you will go buy one of these.....

Its really nice, set it for your height (prone or otherwise) and its a one hand operation after that to get on target.

I am too!! I've been waiting for this shoot since last fall!! I usually like to get out more but with all the shortages of primers and powders its hard to. Its been in the 50's down here lately, this morn is was 28deg but, Im sure it will warm up a bit here in the next week or so. When I got there, there was a nice breeze in my face that all the sudden I could feel on the back of my neck 3 sighters into it. See you in a couple weeks!!!

Well I had some spring fun this morning also :?
I took the .45-90 for it's final test load with the new lot of Swiss and it was really not a good time with the winds switching like a happy dog's tail, but I got the rounds emptied.
I also took the .40-65 to zero in the scope I mounted on the barrel and I found out that I'm getting old :? I forgot that I switched the barrel on the CPA from the .40-65 to the .44-100 and noticed the lack of recoil shooting the .40-65 round in the .44-100/2.6 chamber, well now that case is a .44-70 case :D and a bore full of lead to get cleaned out.
This is one of the problems with a switch barrel rifle when the memory bank starts to fill up.
But the .45-2.4 is ready for Lodi.....I think. :D

Kurt’s comments reminded me of a recent story conveyed to me by my BPCR shooting buddy. A friend of his was shooting a rifle chambered for the .270 Win. He loaded a round which required more force than normal to fully chamber it. When fired the recoil was extremely heavy and the bolt required hammering up and back to eject the case. Figuring it was a fluke, he chambered another round which also required excess force to fully chamber. The recoil was just as bad as the 1st firing and the bolt had to be hammered up and back to remove the spent case.

It turns out he was forcing .308 Win cartridges into a .270 Win. chamber. Due to the shorter length of the .308, with sufficient force, it chambered in the .270. No doubt the increased force was necessary to set the bullet back in the case since it would not slide into a .270 throat. When fired the bullet instantly went from .308” down to .277” diameter and one can only imaging the resulting pressure increase. The rifle (I believe it was a Rem. 700 but not sure) was later checked out by a gunsmith who found no obvious damage.

Well dad has a 44-70 being built at shiloh if you wanna get rid of those new cases you formed!!! I hear you though, its getting tougher every year to fully remember everything! I have to start a week or two before and check multiple times or I will forget something!! Heck that was one reason to even go shooting the other day.....just to see if I have it all!!

Doesn't the Polecat base have a threaded hole centered underneath? Something like 3/8-24 or similar? My original Ray-Vin does and thought the Polecat, as well. It is there to make attachment of additional weight simple. Bolt, washer and a chunk of your favorite weight and good to go.
