My son and I will be there on Thursday. I have loaded black powder loads but was wondering what is the Quigley policy on wads in smokeless powder loads ie 4759 and 5744?

Pilgrim,

In 29 years there have been two accidents. Both involved WADS and SMOKELESS POWDER. It is a DEFINITE "NO".

Wads are bad news with smokeless the maker of 5744 expressly says NO WADS. Read the match policy on smokeless loads.

I read the information on the web site but obviously missed the "wad" part. I remembered the no wad statement from previous Quigleys but could not remember which smokeless powders it applied to. Thanks to all for the help.

It's not a wad problem with blow ups and smokeless it's an air gap problem. Seat the wad at the base of the bullet ,make sure it's broad enough to stay there don't use a filler and you will end blow ups. Wads sticking in the bore to create and obstruction I've heard of but never experienced to my knowledge or ever observed happening. If it occur-res, the compressed barrel air driven ahead of the bullet would most likely clear the wad.
Even then I'd bet it's filler used in smokeless reduced loads that is the real boogy man rather than the wad.

I know that I don't want to be near a neophyte smokeless shooter in a game called BPCR....sorry.

Actually the surprise KW, I think you will find, is that most blow ups happen to seasoned shooters much oftener than new ones. My guess is we can get complacent after thousands and thousands of trouble free reloaded shots. When I think back I cannot remember a single blow up that I had any exposure to happening to a new shooter. In every case it was a well seasoned re-loader.
I have yet to personally experience a blow up but have had two accidental discharges both involving semi auto pistols I was not familiar with. Fortunately the training to keep pointed in a safe direction prevented any serious damage but it sure was a wake up call.
The simple truth is that the potential for a blow up is always present with any one if they are not trained properly and stay vigilant.

Had our monthly clang and bang match today and have to tell you about almost having my first blow up most likely. How timely is that having just been discussing it yesterday.
I was in my fourth relay shooting pigs and about shot six I broke a shot but instead of a report I heard a metallic " clink" sound through my head set. I thought huh the striker sound on a spent case, I must have forgot to chamber a fresh round after the last shot. I dropped the lever, extracted a spent case and every thing seemed normal except I have never in the twenty years of shooting these single shots, forgotten to reload for the next shot before..
I inserted a fresh round but it would not chamber and then the light came on that I had probably squibbed a load and had a slug up bore. Sure enough the bullet had been drive up bore from the primer detonation just enough to let a fresh round partial chamber. Had it been a half inch more I probably would have reloaded and fired, wrecking the rifle and perhaps myself. I am both a seasoned reloader and competitor. I try to be vigilant and cautious but almost had an accident the day after discussing it with all of you. Guys it can happen to any of us so think about this anytime something sounds funny or is out of character in our routine of safe gun handling.
So thank the Lord for deliverance and let me caution each of you that for any reason at all something seems odd , check your bore!!!!!
I always expected that a squib load would make a popping sound like a primer does in an empty case but this did not make that sound at all it just made a clinking sound like the striker had dropped on a empty case from the previous load.
I tied for first score wise today with a 29 but wound up second on ram count.I'll get em next month ! I'd like to get back into the 30's again but it is harder when shooting multiple guns in a match.
