Greetings,
I have on order a 40-50 BN and before it gets called up I am wondering what the chamber and twist options there are (or could be).
My first question is if the Shiloh standard is true to original dimensions or if there is one that is based on current 45-70 base/rim dimensions to simplify brass forming?
Secondly if there is a preference for Grease vs PP for chamber and bullet preference (I have not PP'd before but not adversed to it).
lastly if Shiloh has a selection of available twist rates and pros/cons with bullet weight ranges (GG vs PP).
Just wanted to get ahead of the game so I get what I want. BTW first rifle is planned to be a Hartford following typical period configuration for fun shooting. Second rifle is to be for Schuetzen shooting at 200 yards which would be configured for lighter range bullets.
Thank you,
Charles

Re: 40-50 BN Chamber options?
Given the reduced case capacity of the 40-50 SBN as opposed to the 40-65 WCF or 40-70 SS I would think 1:16 is plenty fast enough to stabilize a pretty long bullet if you could push it fast enough. Pretty sure the Shiloh chamber is cut for the 45-70 brass unless you make arrangements for something different. As hard as it is to find what you need for dies and brass the 45-70 based chamber would be my choice .It has been said here ,WW brass and PP bullets,no neck reaming, trim to length, resize load and go.
Have you found dies ?

I dont use dies in loading mine. I have a sizing die from redding to form cases and a custom taper crimp die i use occasionally. Mostly i shoot, clean, and reload.

I can make my own die (close enough to form from 45-70 then ditto for powderburner) so not a problem though I would rather just buy one.

Re: 40-50 BN Chamber options?
I shoot my 40-50 SBN Shiloh with a 386 grain PP bullet and 58 Grains of Swiss 1.5.
That combo is accurate to the Buffalo at the Q; 805 yards.
I have the Standard 40 caliber twist [1:16].
The only thing I had Shiloh do to the rifle was put in a 7 degree leed to make
shooting PP bullets easier.
In my experience, a BN case & swiss powder requires near zero compression
for good accuracy.
Keep on hav'n fun!

I guess the next question is how does the 7 degree lead effect grease groove performance?

You can also order the barrel with a 18" twist as I did since I wanted to shoot lighter bullets closer to the original rounds.
