40 cal velocity

Post by Perentie »

I have been working on this 40 cal I built up using full length 405 win brass. After lots of ladder testing and lots of Swiss 2F I found 84.5 grains gave me 1min of vertical at 200 yds a couple of times so I have settled for that. Bullet is a Jim 396 415E shortened to 1.369 from 1.425. it weighs 400 grains.
I dont have a Chrony so when I was up the range the other day , a bloke with one offered to let me shoot over it as I could not tell him how fast it was.
My guess was about 1400 or so.
I fired 3 shots over it. The first was 1671fps. I thought that cant be right so fired two more. Got 1708 and 1652. Then I packed up and went home.
The Swiss I am using is pretty old and I only have a few kilos left. Its in the round cardboard container with the red screw on plastic lid.I have to break up the lumps to get it out.
I have not seen any references to velocitys this high. Is this correct or is his chrony reading off or what?

I just looked in my old records for the .40-70 but they go back to 2006 for the last entry and I don't have a swiss load recorded. Back then I mostly used Goex Express in 2F and 3F for it because it shot so well in it. 1652 and 1708 sounds fast.

I used 76 gr of 2F EXP and it gave me 1389 fps average with an ES of 7 and SD of 2 for 10 shots with a 410 gr bullet.

FWIW, for your comparison:

I checked my friend's 40-72W /16 twist Shiloh ( uses full length 405W Hornady brass)
over my Oehler 33 Load was 80 grains of Swiss 1.5 under 371 grain Elliptical Mini groove bullet.
velocities were: 1435-1437fps

My 40-65/16 twist with my 403380 grain paper patch bullet over 78 grains of an old lot of Swiss 1.5
Averaged 1402fps

These loads are in the neighborhood of other person's 40 cal BP loads

I don't think that your load will be actually at 1652-1708 fps unless you were to duplex load

Thanks Kurt and Arnie. Thats what I thought, 1400 something. I think his Chrony must be off.
I will just keep on doing what I am doing :)
