Barrel lengths
What is your favorite barrel length? I am thinking about shortening my 32in to 28in. Any thoughts. Thanks Doc.

Re: Barrel lengths
I have a 30” round barrel 1874 Military rifle, and I’ll soon be receiving my 26” heavy Octagon Saddle rifle, I don’t think that length is as important rifle balance.
The 30” round handles nicely as a hunting rifle when shooting off hand, and I hope that the 26” saddle rifle will as well with the benefit of being well behaved in my cross sticks, as it will have more weight “on the sticks”

Re: Barrel lengths
I have 28 inch barrels and 26 in barrels. Both work quite well and i dont feel compromised a bit with them.
My 45,2&7/8 is 26 inch heavy barreled and I wouldn’t trade it for anything.
It’s a personal thing. Length. But they all shoot.

Re: Barrel lengths
IMHO 30" looks right, feels right, offering the best combination of balance, sight radius, fouling control and velocity for an all around useful rifle. If you are only going to have one Sharps, it should be a 30 incher.
One Sharps he says. Ha! Wanna hear about my 24" carbine?

Re: Barrel lengths
I’m partial to 32 inch barrels but can see where a 26 in on a purely hunting rifle would be nice

Re: Barrel lengths
I play the long range cross stick gong game and hence prefer 34" heavy barrels in my .45's. A 32" works well with my .40's and is nicely manageable for offhand.

Re: Barrel lengths
For target shooting my preference is always a 34" barrel in a #4 weight. But for hunting I'd prefer a 30" in #3 weight.

Re: Barrel lengths
Have them all from 26" to 34". That 28 to 30" length is easier to hold steady offhand. Bobw

Re: Barrel lengths
yep,, I have the 26" heavy octagon and the rifle balance is great
the barrel was originally 30'' but I couldn't hold it up off hand
