32/40 Shiloh

Post by TN Longhunter »

Picked up a new to me Shiloh. Was intrigued because it is chambered in 32/40. Heavy (13 lbs) with that small bore in that big barrel. I shoot various .40s, 45s, and 50s in Sharps and 32/40 in other single shots and Winchesters. This came with a Parsons 6X scope with the iron sights in a bag. Like new condition. Four digit serial without a D.

My questions are; anyone shoot 32/40 in a Sharps? And how many Shilohs have been chambered in .32?

Had one in a CPA. with a 200 grain bullet, it would not knock over or even consistently hit a ram. I loved it in a Winchester 94 with a lighter bullet. I found it to be a very consistent 200 yard cartridge.

Take that baby to a Schuetzen match. The perfect caliber.

For Schuetzen I have a CPA Pope in 32/40 and a Hepburn in 38/55 so I'm covered. I figure with the demise of large game for the "Big Fifty" this is perfect for Groundhogs, opossum, armadillo and other "big" game. Just so heavy to carry around.

There is nothing like a charging armadillo to get the heart rate up. Thank goodness we have the Ohio river to hold them off for a few more years.

I really love the .32-40 cartridge, and own 6 or 7 of them mostly on Ballards, but one Hepburn Match B. All are heavy rifles ranging from 10 lbs. to 14 lb. Schoyen Ballard. Might not be a great silhouette cartridge, but I've taken mule deer with a couple of mine and a lightweight 170 gr. bullet did great.

Yes. Even at 200m in our all off-hand match the 200gr bullet won't knock over a ram. With a 300gr+ bullet in my 38-40 Rem-Hepburn they go down real slow.

Got a chance yesterday to use the backyard range, sight in the scope and ring some steel. Used some cast loads I normally shoot in a Winchester 94. No recoil in this beast. Three shots got it to POA and then moved back and started popping steel. This gun is fun.
