Post by patchbox »

Looking for specs on bore and groove diameter for a Shiloh chambered in .38-55. Anybody know off hand what that is?
Thanks,
Eric

Douglas makes an excellent barrel, so no problem there. But, the most important thing will be the twist-rate. 12" is pretty much the "go-to" twist for heavier bullets. Plus, you will want the 2.125" chamber/brass to maximize powder capacity (my ram load is 52gr of 2f & a 360gr bullet). Starline sells both the 2.125" & 2.08" brass.
The best balanced BPCR rifle I've ever handled was an 1874 with a 30" half-octagon standard-weight barrel and pistol-grip stock.

Hi Glenn,
What velocity are you getting with that 360 grain round and 52 grains of 2f? Using Swiss or some other type of black?

One last question: Are the Douglas chrome moly barrels a 4150 type alloy or a 4140 alloy? Maybe I missed it but could not find the chrome moly steel alloy type they use on their website.

I've not checked it. I'll try to borrow my a LabRadar next weekend and check it out, as I would like to know. I'm guessing it is on the high side of 1200fps.

I've rung 2 rams this season. One at the BPCR Nationals last month. However, there were 7 rams rung that day. Mine with a 38. Then 5 with a 40cal (Brian Youngberg rang 2-in-a-row) and 1 with a 45cal. We are not sure of the reason for so many that day, but the winds were.......... tricky, without a single master score.

OK..... per Labradar my 325gr bullet pushed by 47gr of 2F clocks in at 1305fps. The 360gr pushed by 52gr of 2F leaves the barrel at 1315fps.

So far as much as I have used my .38-50 all rams I hit with a 358 gr bullet went down. But the velocity is higher than the .38-55.

I have a turkey hanging on a chain I practice with off hand at 200 yds and I noticed that I get a lesser reaction using a very hard cast bullet compared to one using a softer lead tin alloy cast with 1/20 tin/lead.
I think the hard alloy fragments more than the softer alloy that will hold together more weight on impact.

My wife and I range a few at friendship over the weekend with our 365 grain Creedmoor bullets. We are shooting 30-50s with only 55 grains of Swiss 2F. Velocity is 1270ish
