Dead beaten horse brought back to beat to death again

Post by drcook »

Hi all, hope all are well.

It's been a while and I have been out of touch with the BPCR world. I sold one of my CPA's to a friend who really doesn't want to shoot BP in the beginning if he can avoid it. Who has a safe load for a 45-70, SMOKELESS powder load ? He is using a 540 gr bullet that he is casting himself.

I gave him 5 lbs of Goex 2F so down the road he can try it out if he wants, but for right now, he just wants to shoot it.

Thanks !
Dave
We thought about it for a long time Endeavor to persevere. And when we had thought about it long enough, we declared war on the Union. I didn't surrender, but they took my horse and made him surrender. They have him pulling a wagon up in Kansas I bet

If your friend has either H or IMR-4198 28gr is a real peach.

I asked the folks at CPA and they said to not exceed 30,000 psi and no jacketed bullets.

Thanks!

Now that I have a process for reloading with black powder for the Sharps, I'm interested in making up some smokeless loads for my Winchester 1886 - plinking rather than super accuracy. I bought some 405 grain flatnose with HiTek powder coating, and I was looking for some IMR4198 locally - can't find any - so I'm still hunting for a suitable powder. I may order online.

My question is whether I need to lube the powder coated bullets. They have lube grooves, but I think the idea of the powder coat is to avoid the need for lube. If I should lube, what do you all recommend?

That's a great load, and my ballistic program shows it's under 20,000 psi, so very safe and mild.

I lube all of my molly, etc. grooved bullets with SPG. Same process as loading for black. That 28gr. 4198 load worked wonders with a Paul Jones creedmoor, 530 gr.
