Hi All,
I realize this is an old thread but I am starting to load some black powder 45-70 and could use a caming tool.
Any available new or does someone want to sell one?

I make cam tools for 1874/1877 sharps, 1885 Highwalls, and Remington Hepburns. Of those three versions, the come in scoped and non-scoped versions. The tools are made of bronze which is a tougher material than brass or 6061 aluminum and wears better. The ears or bearings that stick out on each side and bear against the rear face of the breechblock mortise roll instead of being fixed as on every other design I have seen. When you pull back on a camming tool these fixed bearings (usually a hardened steel dowel pin) travel for a short distance down the rear mortise face as the cartridge is cammed in. With the rolling ears or bearings they roll down the rear face instead of scrape down the rear face.

On a side note, Remington Hepburns have slightly different breechblock mortise widths when comparing originals to reproductions. The repros usually have a narrower mortise so the bearings or ears have to be made narrower for the repros. You want these bearings length to be slightly smaller that the mortise width as this helps center the tool which has a slot to prevent high seated primers from going bang. So the Original versions need the bearings to stick out a little more to prevent side to side slop and to keep the tool centered.
