Quigley SCORES

This is where you can place your scores from the matches. It uses an excel spread sheet! If you send me your sheet of scores I can put it on the forum and provide a link where everyone can view it.

I'm amazed at how well the top shooters handled that wind on Sunday! But did they consider that wind their friend?

Mike, there is a lesson here. Look at the scores of the top ten shooters and then ask yourself if the wind had any influence on moving the following several hundred out of their way? In that case could one conclude that for those top ten the wind was truly their friend?

And, for the other several hundred, not so much.

Shooting in a consistent, steady 5 mph light breeze among that same group of 500 plus the contest would likely degenerate into a trigger pulling contest as everyone shot in the same predictable condition.

Boring? Or a shoot off of 50 shooters that had all scored a 48. Right !

However, the conditions did limit expectations and who there participating fully expected to score a 48 so the wind was their friend in a way also as it gave reason for lowered expectations via lowered scores.

The highest ever score at the Q is 46. The winds are very challenging not only because they change direction frequently and quickly, but also because you’re shooting uphill over a small cliff face on three of the targets (530, 405, and 417). If the wind is from behind you, there can be updrafts that sail your shot way high (because if the cliff). On the other hand, if the wind is in your face, there can be tough down drafts (wind racing downhill), pushing your shot low. The left to right and right to left can be very gusty and tough to manage as the changes can happen very quickly.

There are no range flags at the Q other than what people bring to the line. You have to judge all the down range wind by looking at the grasses, dust from shot splashes, birds, bugs and so forth. At the worst on Saturday this year, the winds were running around 35-38 mph with heavy gusting action.

The last couple years I’ve been there, winds like this have kicked up in the later afternoons on several days leading up to the match. Most of the time when the wind gets really heavy like that on a Tuesday or a Wednesday, everybody will vacate the firing line. It’s actually a really good time to practice. The people (average shooters) who show up to the Quiggly on Thursday afternoon or Friday are generally the ones who have the worst time dealing with the wind.

My observation is that the shooters showing up earlier in the week are predominately shooting black powder. Lots of smoke and booms, and ringing gongs. I enjoy that.

I'll say it again for those not there. The top scores were shot by those allready done for the day before the wind hit late Saturday afternoon and early evening. That wind was only a friend to those done for the day. Bobw

I agree on the Saturday scores. The gusting action was so heavy that shooting a high level score in that would have been near impossible. If we knew which relays shot in those conditions, maybe someone could look at the score sheets and check for the highest scores shot after the wind kicked up? Would be interesting to find out at any rate....
