1877 Picture Thread
Can we start a 1877 picture thread? In the run-up to my order, during the wait, and after receiving it, there was no single thread that had a good collection of pics. I was certain one would have formed here eventually. Perhaps ive missed it. Just a few pics here and there scattered all over the web.
So if you're willing, post your 1877 pics here. I learned some things when ordering and after receiving mine. If you have anything to add about your process, please do.
I ordered mine through Bill Goodman in late 2020. Pain free as usual. I must have been out of their production cycle, as I just received the rifle last month. I think the checkering added quite a bit of time.
Stuff I learned:
Some of this many of you already know or find these items self evident. I struggled through it a bit.
-Presentation american walnut isn't available because it’s too figured in the wrist. Combined with the slender wrist of the 1877, strength is a concern. Circassian walnut is out for the same reason. English and Turkish is acceptable.
-I wanted presentation grade wood, so I was referred to Cecil Fredi of Gunstock blanks (Gunstockblanks.com). They do a fantastic job. Very fast responses, usually same day. He gave me a ton of pics in the price range I wanted, and I picked one out. They shipped it directly to Shiloh.
-If you use wood from an outside source, there’s a $460 fee for the carving at Shiloh.
-You cannot have flared panels with an octagon barrel.
-The round barrel is HEAVY! Most 1877’s I see have long barrels, so the profile looks modest. I wanted a handy-ish short rifle, so I made a bad choice going with round. My 26” 1877 weighs 10 lb 11 oz. With English walnut. The lightest contour is the standard/half octagon. For comparison, I have a 26” standard/half 1874 which weighs 9lb 2 oz with American walnut.
-I have zero experience with english walnut. It appears to be far more closed grain as compared to american walnut. At the AA finish level, the finish is about 98% closed grain and matte in appearance.
-Ive posted this before on this site but the pistol grip/single trigger guns are phenomenally comfortable to shoot. I have a 1874 Creedmoor in this configuration. No reaching around the set trigger. These stocks have a flat/high comb, which means they’re very comfy through recoil. The 1877, which i haven’t shot yet, appears to have identical ergos. I haven't measured the trigger weight on my 77, but it’s around two pounds and the break is fantastic.
My rifle details:
1877 #1 Shiloh English Rifle
English walnut, AA finish, checkered
26” standard round barrel
40-70 SS, Oroville paper patch chamber.
Rigby Rib
Flared panels
Ebony schnable
Pack hardened receiver
Bedded forearm
Steel butt plate
All screws timed to 6 and 12 o’clock
Standard finish on the screw heads.
Semi-buckhorn rear sight
Blade front sight
Pics to follow, i need to resize them first.

WOW!!!!!
That is one striking piece of lumber. I'm too tired just now to take some pics of my 77 but it pales in comparison to yours. I'll post a couple in the morning.

45-100
34" round barrel with Rigby rib
Ebony inlay on pistol grip
Ebony tip on forearm
Forearm panel
Checkering
Steel butt
Extra fancy wood
AA finish
Brass escutcheons
Single trigger
Tried to make it as much like the original Overbaugh Creedmoor 1877 as possible.
I will agree - the recoil from an 1877 is noticeably more comfortable than from an 1874.
Load: 540gr reduced groove money bullet (BACO) (grease groove) with 82 grains Swiss 1.5

Re: 1877 Picture Thread
There is something about the 77 Sharps that makes them feel right when you solder it.
I have a 77 but it's the fore runner before Shiloh bought out the Axtell Company dies.
Mine is a .45-2.6 with a 32" 1/2 round barrel and it has a heal sight mount for shooting it in the spine position. That really works quite well but maybe a lot better for a younger shooter than I am
I really would like a Shiloh build with a single trigger in a smaller caliber like the .38-50.

The 40-50 SBN is a option on the 1877’s also 40-50 SS , I’ve been working out what my next 1877 should be. So far a # 2 28” half round polished barrel, regular wood, glass bedded, and a few other options.Another 40-50 SBN is a strong contender.I really would like a Shiloh build with a single trigger in a smaller caliber like the .38-50.

Open Country,
They shoot as good as they look. The case came from C Sharps. I wanted a case with green felt one but couldn't find one anywhere.
I much prefer the feel of the 1877 over the 1874 models for prone long range shooting.
