Swiss inconsistency ????

Post by Kurt »

Since the OE is gone I been pretty much shooting Swiss, mostly the 2F. I just got a new lot of 2F Swiss and took some rounds to the range this morning to compare with the last lot of 2F so I loaded some to compare with the last lot.
Those two lots were only a month apart so I figured the two lots should be close..... WRONG!!.....
The last lot was Nov/15/2022 and the new lot is Dec/01/2022. You would think that they would be close in performance. Here is what I found this morning. The conditions were great, no wind, good light, but it was hot enough to get the T shirt wet sitting under cover in a short time :D

The old lot:

Here is the other one.

Looks like more trigger time developing a new load coming up.
I hope that the OE comes back soon!!

Well I shot a silhouette match at Alma Michigan last weekend and I shot the new lot of December Swiss with the 65 gr load and the 65 gr load of the November Lot that I been shooting. I did not have time working up a load with the new powder so I just loaded enough for the match.
On Saturday I shot the new December lot and ended with a 18 at the end.
Sunday I used the old Nov. lot and I finished with a 25.
The new lot is heavier per volume a little.

How does the volume to weight compare between the 2 lots?

Gary,

Filling the same case using a drop tube and trickle and scraping off the top the November lot weight 62.6 grains and the December lot dated a month later weight 61.2 grains.

It sure made a difference at the match using the same weight load and components I used between the two lots.
But it could have been me also. I just cant hold as well sitting on a stool as I could shooting prone.

I had 2 lots that were a week apart from January 2022. I have not noticed any changes between the two. So, seeing how I had 12 pounds of each, I blended both of them together!

Shooting from the sitting position is much much more difficult than prone. I heard the winds were up over the weekend also.

Ian,
I havent been able to shoot prone for several years with the bad compression fracture of the lower 5 and it's getting worse but I have adjusted to shooting sitting. No I'm not anchored in when the winds come up or even when it's calm like I was prone but I except it and do the best I can.

LOL, yes, winds :D Alma has strange winds :D
The close flags point in opposite directions most of the time :D I watched a leaf falling that drifted right to left and 1/2 way down it did a full reversal :D

I know the micrometer measurement of the B&M drop tube of the old lot.
I then drop the new lot from the B&M measure into the drop tube set at the old lot volume setting and weigh that same volume. (45-90)
Seldom is the difference close with 1.5, 2 or 3F Swiss.
I then start the ladder loads with the same volume of the old lot both below and above the new lot volume to find the "ACCURATE" load which is frequently the load with the least extreme spread in velocity.
On the ladder loads if I get 3-4 loads that essentially print at the same elevation at 200 yards I will shoot 5-6 rounds of each load on separate targets at 200 yards to see the tightest group, that one then is tried on Turkey's and Rams. Then straight to 800 yards with the best one. Desired goal is two minutes or less five shot groups out to 800 yards. Occasionally get 4-6 inch vertical out at 800 yards, not always. (Yes Virginia, that is about one half minute vertical.)

When I get a new lot of powder I always work up a load for it. I just didn't have time doing this for the match so I just loaded the new lot like I did the old, but it really surprised me that it made this much difference between the two. I had a terrible time at the ram line with the new lot.
Two years ago I had a lot of 1.5 Swiss that was terrible but the next was very good.

Ian,
I don't remember the lot# anymore it's been several years ago. It was very light weight 1.5 and lighter color than usual. I could not get anything worth while shooting in the .40 or the .44's.
I did get fair results in the .50 with it but not in the smaller calibers.

Ian, to expound on this subject just proved frustrating and it is an extensive story. Half way through the posting here Windows crashed. I am not going to start over. Differences in performance should be assumed and compensated for, some a little, some a little more, but not unusual. irrespective of brand or lot.

I make slight adjustments when working up a new lot. Some lots need more or less powder but I have yet to run into one that I was unhappy with. I just ordered 50 pounds of 1.5 so this will probably be the time a get a bad one.
