Decapping Tool

Post by Castaway »

I’m looking for a decapping tool for a 32-40 that’s convenient to use at the range. I’d love to find one similar to the one Shiloh sells but haven’t had any luck. I’ve found a Harvey decapper, and Frankford Arsenal decapper. Another option is a lee rod and shell holder or base. I have a universal decapping die but I’d like to throw the decapped brass in the sonic cleaner directly after returning from the range. Any suggestions?

Maybe look at a shiloh decapper and do some measuring to see how much you would need to turn down the decapper rod?

I use an old Lyman 310 tong tool with a universal decapping rod. I like it because It has better leverage than the smaller sized decappers. They are kind of expensive on ebay but I have seen them in older gun shops and on craigslist pretty reasonable.

Have you looked at the ones CPA sells? I don't have experience with that one exactly, but I use very similar ones I bought from Buffalo Arms some time ago.

I like the Harvey with the adapter that Doug Fleming makes.

I use a Jerry Cleave re-decapping tool. I ordered mine to be able to use for almost every cartridge I shoot. Jerry built extra shell holders, sleeves for the decapping rods to ensure a perfect fit, plus priming rods for small and larger primers. Finest re-decapping tool ever.

I have the Frankford one, from Midway. Used on everything from 50-70 to 32 H&R. Works great.

Found one! Not exactly, but I modified my Shiloh decapping tool. I punched out the roll pin that holds the decapping rod to the tool, chucked the rod in my drill and went to work with my grinder. After getting the rod to the right size, I first smoothed the grinder marks with a file, then finished with an Arkansas stone, reset the pin and am now in business for 45 and 32 caliber cases!

Suppose I could have but I didn’t. Looked at options and liked the Shiloh tool. Would be nice if they offered various rods that could be ordered separately

Now that you have turned your 45 cal rod down to 32, it will not work as intended for your 45 cal cases. You will have difficulty inserting the decapping pin into the primer vent hole and will occasionally break pins. Time to make a separate 45 cal pin.

Woody, the original diameter was slightly less than 0.370” and the pin had to be carefully inserted into the flash hole anyway. Will see if there’s a problem; if so, then yes, another tool may be in order. The 45 cases I tested on were as easily decapped as before

A perfect slip fit of the rod to the case neck ID makes decapping so much easier and faster. Having to search for the flashole each case is a PITA, and as mentioned can result in a bent decapping pin.
I had to send Jerry a cartridge case for each case I wanted him to make sleeves for so he could guarantee a perfect fit. Well worth it as the cases just drop over and the pin aligns instantly.
