Crosssticks
I have a curious question concerning crossticks. I've nearly completed three sets of crossticks for my sharps rifles and am looking into materials for the strips that the barrel will rest on and am considering Latigo leather but I recently came across some 1/8 Masonite material that is very hard and slick,so I was wondering if this is allowed in competitions, and if anyone has tried it? Thanks, Wes

I like the felt commercial carpet padding. It’s about 3/8” thick and the barrel slides smoothly over it and it absorbers the vibrations well.

Personally I wouldn't use something as hard as Masonite to rest the barrel on. Over time it could rub bluing off. I use old leather belts cut up.

Re: Crosssticks
I like leather from the stand point:
It wears well.
It has enough frictional properties it helps keep the gun in place.
It is gentle on your barrel.
"Works fine and lasts a long time," and the old belts a terrific idea!

To answer your question, yes, you can use it. But only one layer of material may be used as padding if you are in a NRA Silhouette or NRA Target rifle matches. Most other matches do not care.
Now to address what the others were eluding to. Most shooters are looking for some material that pad the barrel, yet let your barrel "slide" back and forth as the rifle is fired. I would probably stay away from Oiled type leather like latigo. I would use more like the belt leather. It is a more dried leather. It will be padding for the barrel and yet allow the barrel to slide with the recoil. Wool felt or similar will give the same effect to.
If you are using a round barrel or half round, you barrel as a tendency to "roll" in the cradle of the sticks. To help prevent that you will want something that "bite" to the barrel, but again slide in with recoil. Leather or wool felt will do that, sure there are others too. Octagon barrels seem to "sit in the saddle" of the sticks easier/better just from the "get go". I have shot with just the wood, some type of poly or plastic, wool felt and Leather. I would suggest you tape on whatever you wish to try and see how it works for you.

Re: Crosssticks
I used strips of leather harvested from an old couch years ago. Suedey side out to be nice and cushy on the barrel. The sticks are left over hickory flooring from a remodel in the 2010's and the steel spikes are from some left over bracket steel from a mis-designed floating shelf from the same remodel. Which all proves to my wife that keeping the garage full of crap that "will be useful some day" pays off from time to time.
...Actually, it proved nothing to my wife, who still thinks I'm a messy packrat with hoarding tendencies and an unhealthy obsession with making useless stuff in the garage that smells bad and contaminates the house.
