.45/110/550 Recoil in 16# gun

Post by opencountry »

Could anyone share some experience shooting a 16# gun chambered in the .45/110/550? Is it still a hard-hitting brute with the extra weight in the barrel? And I'm speaking of the shotgun style stock.

Thanks,

Robert :)

I have a 45-100 LRE that weighs 13.5 pounds. The recoil is tolerable. I can shoot 60 shots in a match with it. I think a 16 pound gun would be easy by comparison. My loads are full house BP loads with 1300 fps velocity pushing a 540 grain bullet. - Mike

ps: I have a 34 inch no. one heavy barrel. When Kirk starts making Borchardts I will either get a 40-90 BN or a 45-110 with a 26 inch barrel and a Breako mercury recoil reducer for a single shot BP hunting rifle. - Mike

Thanks you guys,

Maybe when I order mine I'll have them include the mercury break as well.

I have a 45-110 Quigley, and shooting the 520gr. Lyman bullet (haven't got my PJ mould yet), I don't mind the recoil at all, it's very close to a 12 guage shotgun I think, as do others who have shot it. When I shoot from the bench I use a shooting bag from Dog-Gone-Good, the back itself is pretty heavy and I don't feel hardly anything. It's a very pleasant and fun caliber to shoot I think.

Thanks again everyone,

That website on recoil formula is great. This has been one of the most helpful forums I have ever been to before. I appreciate the help and comments from everyone a lot. I'm going to talk with Kirk when he returns next week about calibers, sights, etc.. I'm just doing my homework first before ordering the gun. Right now I feel fairly confident that the .45/110 will deliver the accuracy and range I want out of the gun. My thoughts swung recently toward the mild recoil of the .45/70 but, the long range ability is just not up to the .45/110. I plan on paper-patching the BA's 550 ball with red rooster, and using Goex 1F , compressed. There are plenty of people who offer outstanding loading tips and formulas.

Thanks again...

Robert :)

OC, I have a 16lb 110 (weighs close to 17lbs) and I also have a 13 1/2lb LRE in 45-110 and the difference in recoil is not as much as one would suspect.

I have a LRE with the 34 inch brl. I am shooting 575 gr. Big Mamu's and have no complaints. The rifle weighs in a about 13 pounds. A 16 pound gun should be no problem at all..
