in an 1863 military rifle, .54 caliber, made by Shiloh 3 years ago, I'm told the twist is 1-48. The current owner is using a ringtail bullet with 70gr of fffg in a cardboard tube. My questions are: 1-48 twist will stabilize what range of bullets? I plan on hunting this year with this rifle and I"m curious to the weight of the .54 bullets capable of being stabilized by 70-120 grains for powder?

I shoot both the rifle and the carbine in 54 cal and use the raphine ringtail that weighs about 400 gr. In the rifle for 200yd shooting i use 64 grains of Swiss. this rifle shoots 2 to 2 1/2 " groups at 200 yds, I shoot 50 grains of Swiss with the carbine and from a bench it will shoot possibles all day long. Both Shiloh's are outstanding weapons.. In the rifle the chamber accepts a 1.875 tube, the carbine 1.2. I get the tubes from Charlie Haun

Mike, made a mistake on the bullet weight, they weigh 480 gr.
