Well boys here are some pictures of my sons first antelope hunt in Wyoming. The day started at 5 30 a.m. with a shower for me and a wake up call for Hunter my 5 year old. He was so out of it we were walking down to the truck before he realized what was going on. Then he gave me a big smile and said OH YA dad we are going hunting today. 40 bucks worth of junk food at the Kum and Go and we were on the road. I told him to put on his hunting eyes and let me know when he saw some antelope. I can tell you he saw hundreds of them on the way to the ranch and he told me about everyone of them. As we pulled into the pasture we saw a heard of antelope on the other side of a cut. I pulled the truck down next some old buildings and we got ready. I had my pep talk with Hunter about being quit and always follow behind me blah blah blah blah is what he was thinking. I put in a 473 grain PP bullet in my virgin 50 2 1/2 and the sneak began. We eased up to the top of the hill and by God there they were, half standing and half bedded down. I sat down with Hunter and pulled out my range finder they were 170 yards. I waited until a good size doe turned side ways and I dropped the hammer. I heard the bullet hit but did not see it strike the doe. The herd exploded out of the sage with my doe in the middle of them. She made it 30 yards and piled up. The herd took off up the cut and I told hunter follow me. I put in another round and we snuck around the edge of the cut to see if the herd would stop again. There they were mingling around in the sage. I sat down again and watched the herd waiting for a doe to turn broad side. Within a few seconds another big doe turned broad side, I knew she was a little further then the first doe I killed. I gave her a little more front sight and touched the 50 off again and down she went. I ranged her after the shot and she was at 191 yards. Hunter was speechless he couldn't wait to go down and look at the antelope. Tell you the truth I think I was more excited then him. We went down and looked at the first doe. I nailed her right threw the lungs. I drugged her down to the bottom of the cut and we walked up to the other doe. Same thing the bullet went into her front shoulder blew up in her lungs and broke her spine. Hunter helped me with the gutting by holding the legs for me. He got to put his finger into the bullet holes in the lungs. I can say that Hunter is a HUNTER IN EVERY SENSE. Nothing scared him it was like he had been doing it for years. Maybe when I'm watching hunting shows on T.V. he is actually paying attention to them I don't know but he is a natural. So 2 goats..2 shots...in 2 minutes. The 473 grain pp bullet worked great. I duplicated the factory load in every way possible. Again a BIG THANKS to Orville for letting me use his chamber. Thanks to Shiloh there rifles are top of the line in every way and my Dad for getting me into hunting and blackpowder guns when I was a little boy. The Big 50 is broke in. Tomorrow I am taking out my 7 year old to hunt antelope in another unit. I have a buck tag and just maybe the 50 will get another one.
