On the 6th day of season, my wife took this photo from the garage door.....

Image

But 4.5 hrs earlier I had found this herd and ..... After a 3 hour stalk

Image

However, unlike some lucky folks, it took 3 plus hours to get it home....

A week earlier and almost the same situation.....

Now, if I can just find some pheasants!!

I hate photo bucket!! If you click on the photo a couple times and then click on the little glass with a plus in it, it'll come up a size you can actually see.

A couple things I didn't mention. No, I did not use my Shiloh, it was a 6mm on deer and a 7mm on elk. Deer season was in a pouring rain and I didn't want to take my Shiloh out in it. Elk season, it was a light rain and I knew when I spotted the herd it would be a very hard stalk, I think it involved almost 100 yds of crawling through very low brush at times in addition to going through heavy tall brush. There was 150 eyes on the other side of the canyon and I had to get to the top where it narrows to even get a shot. I doubt I would have gotten either with the Sharps as the conditions were poor. Both animals took 3++ hours to get out and I was home 2 hours after dark on the elk. Finished skinning it at 11pm.

I have some real good deer jerky!! Elk back straps coming soon too! :D :D

Congrats Gussy both look to be fine eating animals. The older I get the more important that is to me. I like nice looking antlers too, but it is not why I hunt. You want to use a scoped rifle I'm okay with that also, age and experience has taught me what I need to choose or how to do it. Anybody don't like that can take a free flying sc**w at a rolling donuthole. Congrats again your in for fine eating with your homebrews. bobw

Funny thing, that herd returned to the canyon the next day and stayed until the last day. They returned this morning again. Still 75 animals and several spikes. Unless you have a special tag, you can only shoot spikes. There was 6 large branch antlered bulls with one trophy class in the herd. I must have been the only one that found them. Usually they break up into smaller groups if they get hit by hunters.

I was on the timbered side of the canyon and shooting through an opening in the tree branches. They never knew where I was or saw me.

This is the first time in 6-8 yrs that they were even in the canyon and stayed long enough to get near. They've passed through a couple of times but never a large herd. This was a first in a very long time.

Pretty good except for one spot...

He had a pin in his ass...... Found a recent broadhead stuck in his spine very high up and about 6" in front of the hip joint. That area was a bit rancid and I cut a wide path around it!!

Hey Gussy good work!!
Now I do expect some jerky on the table at the Q!!
I found one that had a triangle wound high on the shoulder all the way through the shoulder blade missing the spine once that was all festered up and when I got him skinned and taking the back straps off and cutting them in chops I saw a yellow streak going through the veins. Be careful when you cut the meat and watch for the infection traveling through the meat.

Kurt,

I check that meat VERY carefully and cut a wide swath away from the area. Did not find any problems any place except right where the arrow was. I think it was in there for several weeks and was healing. It still had 4" of carbon shaft. I tied the back bone to a tree to let the critters clean it off and I will go back in a few day to get the tip if it's still there.

Jerky will be there!!

I had one with an arrow lodged in it. I figured 1 1/2 to 2 years. It went down thru the spine and lodged between 2 ribs on the inside. The bone grew around the broadhead to the 2 ribs on the inside.Dangedest thing Ive ever seen.
