Actually that sounds like one of the more plausible possibilities to me. But it matters not a whit. Kirk will set it right, permanently.

Solution? Get a 1878 - no hammer screw to loosen...

An interesting note. The Sharps Collectors magazine publishes from time to time some of the dealer orders and one from Texas was for rifles, tools and they also requested a dozen [12] hammer screws. Seems this is not a new condition.

That is a heck of an interesting historical tidbit, Tom.

So - how is that wobbly hammer working out for you? We are all sort of wondering if you just went to a couple of wraps of baling wire on it and called it a night.

Thanks to all who offered suggestions to solve my loose screws. My computer dropped out on me then I got busy but am now back in tarnished glory. Red Lock Tite seems to have fixed the problem. The screw remained tight for the last Big Hill and Medicine Rocks shoot last year and for such shooting as I have done over winter.

To answer some questions posed in relation to the problem, I never drey fire the rifle by dropping the hammer; I only set and trip the set trigger with the hammer resting on the transfer bar. In previous attempts to secure the screw, I degreased the screw and the threads in the tumbler but may not have gotten things clean enough nor did I shake the container of blue Lock Tite. This time, I took pains to clean things out and used red Lock Tite and seems to work.
