Hello,

Hoping someone can shed some light on this for me. I am looking to add the "hand select" option to my order ref my stock. I am still contemplating standard vs semi and a sporter #3 with ebony grip vs a roughrider....however currently my order still stands as a #3.

I am wanting very dark wood. Or at least as dark as Shiloh can select. Would one standard of wood have a darker selection than the other? I will be getting the AA finish so I'm not sure how well stain would take after the fact, which is why I'd like it to come dark (as possible) from
the factory.

Get a Roughrider with semi-fancy wood and you will be a happy camper. Shoot straight, rdnck.

Wood will darken with age.

I will have to do this. I have sent an email and PM, but to no avail. Maybe a phone call would be best!

When I ordered my first Shiloh I got standard wood but also requested dark wood and they delivered. So which ever grade you choose just ask for dark.

IIRC-You can ask for 'hand select' and go for the AAA finish.

Look up Cecil Fredi and select the wood you want from literally 1000d's of blanks. Cecil and Shiloh work together frequently I have half a dozen rifles with his wood on both Shilohs and highwalls cecil a straight shooter

Dave Roelle is spot on, when I ordered my 77 I was made aware of the Cecil Fredi option. I was able to view all the blanks that have a coat of varnish on them so you see both sides up close.It only took me about 20 min of looking before I found what was looking for.If I was spending $500+ for upgraded wood I want to see it before I commit to it.Then no one fault if you don't like it.

I'm taking the chance on the 74 now 'on the floor' being built.
I ordered it with Extra Fancy Walnut for an additional $500.
I called Lucinda a while ago and asked it I could pay for 'hand select'. she said the wood was already on the receiver (Oct.) and
the wood was a beautiful piece of Walnut and I would definitely like it..

Now. I ordered it with the oil finish.. This will allow me to darken it if necessary..
In the past, If I wanted a REALLY dark finish, I would use Chromium Trioxide. available from Dixie.
small bottle, add water, USE RUBBER GLOVES and go slowly.
put it on. let it stand, wash it off with a vinegar and water solution.
IF YOU HAVE NEVER USED THIS...DON'T START ON A $4000 BRAND NEW SHILOH!

regular oil will darken the stock with use and age and give it an 'old English' look.

Been gunsmithing antiques for 40 years plus, and wood can always be darkened. as long as there is no finish on it already.
use it, touch it, get your hand oils on it, and it becomes yours....

Ok, I did post these pictures on another topic line, but this is my new Shiloh 74
extra extra fancy wood, a $500 upgrade from regular. not the $900 presentation upgrade but
this is the next to highest grade.
the pictures do not show the depth and color changes of the walnut.
As I'm oiling it, the grain is popping.
the crotch grain on the butt is beautiful, and then, while the picture does not show it well, there is a
flame striped grain up to the wrist.
The fore end is just perfect. 100% coverage.

Your stock looks similar to my semi-fancy Roughrider from 1999. As I remember, it is Iowa red walnut? Also, when I picked up my Sharps at Big Timber, the owners told me the barrel did not need to be broken in.
