1874 vs 1877 weight

I'm going to assume the 1874 Creedmoor as listed is pretty close to the max 12.2 lbs. having a barrel of (.875 at muzzle to 1.125 at receiver) and 30".

First I'm wondering if that would be considered a standard round barrrel? Given that it is. If I were to make this an 1877 rifle which, from what I've heard, has a receiver almost a lb lighter, how much heavier of a barrel? size? would one would be able get?

If you want specific information, you should call Shiloh.

I don't think anyone spends all day monitoring this forum waiting for you questions.

Pink Panther,

I wouldn't put much credence in your assumption. A barrel with those dimensions would likely result in a rifle weight closer to 10 lb. A #1 Sporter with heavy barrel, 1.125" at the breach and 1" at the muzzle weighs close to 10 lb.; with standard barrel, it probably weighs 10 to 10.5 lb. IIRC, the Creedmore has a round barrel, making it even lighter in comparison to the octagonal barrel of the #1.

Remember, too, that the differences in wood density can make weight vary by up to 0.5 lb. I had one #1 Sporter heavy octagon that weighed right at 12 lb. 2-1/2 oz. with sights; my current #1 with heavy 1/2 octagon weighs 11 lb. 6 oz.

The folks at Shiloh can give you a more accurate idea.

In one of the Black Powder Cartridge News articles from a while ago someone wrote a bit about this. From what I remember, based on wood density, it's possible for an 1877 with a 32" .40-65 heavy barrel can make silhouette weight. It probably depends a lot on options chosen and wood density. I had two C. Sharps highwalls with identical looking wood and one was 1/2 pound heavier than the other.
