At this point-
I would try alloy from another source.
And see what could be done to try your rnds in a different rifle.
When did you switch to the current lot of powder?
Do you have any other powder you could try?

I did try another powder - last weekend. It failed miserably - which is to say, the powder is just fine, as was the old powder.
Well, if you want to experiment I can make up a few lap slugs for you to fire through your bore and then see if the patched bullets respond favorably to the fire lapping.
Thanks but no thanks. I can make lead slugs and I have a firing lapping kit (Wilson?). I'm not inclined to do that however.
Right now, I'm convinced that bullet stability is the problem. But I don't know why. My normal 16:1 has always done well and 12:1 did not solve the problem. So where to next? I don't know, but it is something I'm doing. It's almost as if I'm bending the bullets somehow.
The easiest thing now, would be to change alloy source.
Also, trying your loads in another rifle would tell much since the loads don't work in yours.

Seven pages and no one has offered any cause that it could possibly be or any solution that could possibly work. Interesting.
I still say it would worth the time to let someone else shoot one or both of Brent's rifles and have Brent shot someone else's rifle. There has to be a way to eliminate some of the possibilities and narrow down the list suspects. Or we could just fill several more pages with nothing gained.

I had another thought Brent that I had not noticed being brought up, have you been examining your spent patches to see any change in how and where they are being expelled?
It seems to me that erratic patch expulsion is the probable cause which I believe is directly attributable to bore wall texture or paper quality.
"Have you given any thought to having another 'known' shooter, give these rifles a go?"
Gary,
I believe I read them all, but this has been on going for a while now and I'm old and I tend to forget things. Besides, I also mentioned this idea at some point and was just echoing it above. The frustrating thing to me is that we are no closer to a solution than when we started. It's almost as if it's not to be solved. Just saying.
