I'll hang a Christmas ornament on it and give you a bonus for hitting it.

One last question and I'm gonna drop this subject til spring. Hopefully a few more shooters that went to matches and got the short end of a relay will speak up.

First, In my opinion if I'm shooting Black Powder, 6 shooters per relay is the perfect size. Any less and those wiping really get rushed
Second, I think its unfair not to give everyone the same number of clean targets.
I'm of the same opinion, 6 seems to be perfect for what we do, 5 seems to be the minimum, 7 seems to be the max.
If we end up at times with 4 per relay, because of # of shooters, so it is.
semtav wrote:Since nothing is perfect and you never get the perfect number of shooters , if you are given the choice of shooting 3 relays per target with approximately 6 shooters per relay or 4 relays with 4-5 shooters , which would be preferable ?

Reason I'm asking, If you have 4 targets, and 4 relays per target, you shoot 2 relays, paint targets, shoot 2 relays, move to another target while painting, easy peasy !!
It seems to me 3 relays would be fine, 4 seems to get a little to long. If you've got the #'s to use 6 per relay, seems senseless to cut it back to 4 just to make 4 relays, just to paint like the above. I see what you're trying to do, with the above painting rotation. Sometimes things sound good when we talk about them, application in the match, is great, outcome/reality, might suck.

16-21 shooters/board, (16) 5, 5 ,6. (17) 6, 6, 5. (18) 6, 6, 6. (19) 6, 6, 7. (20) 7, 7, 6. (21) 7, 7, 7. We're still in that sweet spot.

There's 4 targets at the Mt 1000yrd & Buz Coker Memorial.

When's the last time there was more than 84 shooters at the Mt 1000?

Look at the size of your targets Brian, they're 4' & 5' at Mt 1000

4' For the Memorial? 2 targets at 1000, 1 at 900 & 1 at 800. The diamond might be a little bigger? 18 shooters can put some marks on a target, BUT, (again with the big butt), it's not like we're shooting at a 408yrd diamond, during the Q.

P.S. DON'T change the diamond at the Q, it is what it is. (cue the catterwalling from Kurt "I can't see it for the bushes" Altenburg & Mark) 3.....2.....1........
I might have spelled Altenberg wrong, TWICE

Reality seems to be more around the 12-16/board.

EXAMPLE

Medicine Rocks. We shot lever action, 22 rifle & revolver matches, all on Saturday, a lot going on for shooters, can you imagine what it was like for the two guys running the match?

Bright idea, let's move the revolver matches to Friday afternoon, most everyone that's here, is, well, here already. Then we've got one less gun change for everybody, one less match to run, score & less compacted whirl wind day. We'll have more time, be a much more relaxed day, fun, right?

Reality

We made the lever gun & 22 rifle matches 10rds/target, up 2rds from the 8rds/target from previous, what's 2rds?
BEFORE the matches, (lever gun & 22 rifle), were over on Saturday Mark & I proclaimed it a backfire, backfire, hell, it was a failure. Wasn't any faster, as a matter of fact, we might of taken LONGER when we finished that afternoon,

We immediately went back to 8rds/target, left the revolver matches on Friday afternoon, lever gun & 22 rifle on Saturday & never looked back, Sounded great when we talked about it, (this is a no brainer), application, flawless, outcome, sucked, we received a little dose of reality.

What's 2rds, afterall?

Time, 2rds is time.

This option below, there's a lot of stopping, starting & moving, consumes significant time, refer back to EXAMPLE ABOVE
We shooters do like our rhythm, this just seems a little herky jerky.

Still, I see what you're trying to do
This is why we rotate our relays target to target, it gets everybody around the best it can
semtav wrote:If you have 3 relays, to give everyone 2 clean targets you would have to shoot 2 relays, stop and clean targets, shoot the third relay, move to the next target and shoot the first relay, then stop and clean targets then shoot the next two targets etc.

that might get too complicated for some, and I'm sure the smokeless shooters could care less, but seems that would be the only fair way for BP shooters.

Any Opinions ??

I think the ornament will fix that problem

Do you suppose we could also get some of those shinny, glittery ropes wrapped around it

Consider it done. With enough of you shooting at the ornament, I might even be able to place.

Ya know, IF you actually wrapped it up in the glittery rope stuffy, KURT might actually STOP shooting at it

You mean the way ranchers paint 'COW' on their cattle during hunting season? Do you think a BIG sign saying 'BUSH' in front of it might help Kurt?

BTW Paul, :P you owe me a drink for that, I had to clean the tea off the windshield and dash, then there was the choking and hacking, due to the liquid going into the air pipe.

I believe the liquid going into the air pipe facilitated the tea everywhere else but where it was supposed to go

Kurt, didn't those Swiss Brown cows fall over in Illinois? True story, Spot and I spent three weeks in Central Europe many years ago and as we rolled through the Alps on an Alpen Bus we saw many Swiss Browns grazing on the steep mountain sides. The tour guide explained that Swiss Browns have two short legs on one side so they don't fall down the mountain. I wondered then as I'm wondering now what happens when they get to flat ground?

Stumbled across this thread looking for something so I thought I'd bring it back up. Been 4 years.
Be interesting to see what the new year brings

Blackhorn still wins a lot of trophies, is it the powder or the shooters. Those Blackhorn guys do seem to practice an awful lot and are some of the top shooters in this region. Be interesting what the price of Blackhorn does to that.

Haven't kept up with the smokeless issues other than 4759 is no longer obtainable other than new old stock

Paperpatch is winning a lot of the local matches here and there Seems to be a growing contingent of paperpatch shooters in the area so maybe that will start translating to more trophies won in the future.

Scope vs iron. Still haven't seen the scopes take off and run away with things long range wise yet.

Brian, I think the price of blackhorn will keep people from buying it but most of us will make it through this year and that will give us time find something else. its so high right now, if they cut the price in half it would still be high

looks like the paperpatch is really working for you. when I've spotted for you i've been impressed with your groups. But i think I'm getting too old to start down that road.

I too have not seen anything really impressive about the scopes except they keep the shooters with poor eyesight shooting.
