BACO 459530M3 vs 459542M3

Post by gunlaker »

Does anyone know the differences between these two bullets? The specs on the BACO web site are the same for both bullets as far as I can see.

I have the 459540M3 and it's a good bullet, but I'm just curious as to what the differences are...

thanks,

Chris.

I can see that I made a typo in the thread title.

The two bullets are the 459540M3 and 459542M3

Dave I know what the basic designations are already. I need to know driving band differences for the 459540M3 and the 459542M3. The description on the web site shows the same dimensions on the driving bands and length. I can't believe that Dave would sell two molds who's only difference is 2gr.

I'm also reasonably confident that the 459542M3 was requested by someone who visits this site :-).

I have the 459540M3 and it's a great bullet that matches all of the numbers on BACO's site, but it also seems to match all of the numbers for the 459542M3 which makes no sense.

I have no listing for a 459542M3 but I do for a 459541M3.

From the listing you can easily determine:

Neither of your bullets are listed as tapered or reduced band so this means all driving bands will be .459".
459540M3 has Mini Grease Grooves.
459541M3 has standard Grease Grooves.
459540M3 is .010" longer so it means it has a slightly pointier nose .

The 459542M3 is so TOP SECRET that it has been featured as the winning bullet and bullet of choice for long range in several articles in Black Powder Cartridge News. This was done so nobody would pay attention to the successes of using that bullet. I suspect, but do not know for a fact, it is a copy of an original Dan Theodore design as I have a Paul Jones Mould make that Dan Theodore designed and I cannot distinguish them apart. It does, however, shoot quite well in any .45 Caliber Black Powder Cartridge Rifle I have shot it in. It is my go to bullet in the 45-90 with standard chamber for long range cast sixteen to one, lead to tin sized to groove. So let's keep it secret that this is a very accurate bullet and the only known shooters that use it extensively are Dave Gullo, Aviator and myself. 8)

Ha thanks Zack. I figured you'd know if anyone did :-).

For the most part I've been using the old fashioned 458535M1 in my .45-90 and it works very well. I've tested the 459540M3 at 300 yards in the same rifle and it was superb but I didn't have enough testing time on it to use in a match. Then I decided I needed another 0.459" Money bullet for one of my .45-70's ( for silhouette ) and noticed these almost identical molds...

Matter of fact, I was so impressed with the performance I bought two moulds rather than rely on one. Just in case. 8)

But that really doesn't mean anything if it doesn't up your WOW factor on target with your rifle.

I thought the first Money Mold designed by Dan T. was the Doc Lay Money Mold.
Is the 459542M3 a duplicate of it?

Schuetzen Dave, I have the Doc Lay Hardline Mould, the Paul Jones Mould DT designed mould (designed specifically for a DT GG chamber) and the BACO 459542M3 Mould.

The Hardline bullet does not, to my eye, resemble either of the other two.

However the Jones and BACO Moulds do resemble each other. I just have not shot them at 1,000 "yet" side by side and it is not really on my bucket list to do that. The PJ Mould in my DT Chambers and the 542M3 in standard chambers exceed expectations and if it ain't broke I am not inclined to try fixing it. To state it plainly, both shoot better on target as designated than my individual ability to differentiate between them.

The brief interlude with the Hardline bullet did not change my mind about the other two for LONG RANGE.

If anyone has that Hardline Mould they might try it for midrange and silhouette though.

Can you explain how the Doc Lay is somewhat different from the other two?

Side by side visual comparison is the determinant.

Possibly Doc Lay could chime in. The Hardline may well be a faithful reproduction of a bullet that Dan designed for Doc. That is my suspicion but am unable to present it as fact.

My PJ Mould is a DT design for my DT chamber designed rifle made by Paul Jones.

Dave, I just remembered the PJ Money bullet you gave me last summer.

Here is a picture of it on the left. The BACO 459540M3 is on the right.

Diameter: .4594" ( spec 0.459" )

Looks like it has a front driving band and slightly different grease grooves but fairly similar.
