Have also never noticed any particular problems with fouling in my 38s (38-56, 38-55, 38-50 & 38-40RH). Until this year was all GG and wiped like CW50 with a very wet Arsenal patch on a nylon brush with a 7-1 mix of Napa cutting oil or 'moose milk'. PP loads are wiped with BACo bore-pigs and same mix of liquid and same results.

I have been shooting a 35-40 for 14 years and a 38-50 for 17 years and I also have never noticed any particular problems with fouling. I wipe like CW50 with a damp Arsenal patch on a nylon brush with a 10-1 mix of Napa cutting oil. For these smaller calibers, you can leave the blow tube at home; you have to wipe. Because of their relatively fast twist, they seem to prefer 16 to 1 alloy. They don't seem to like antimony bearing alloys.

Interesting, I tried wiping the same as mentioned so maybe it is a barrel problem with grease groove bullets. It's no longer a problem with PP bullets.
I use the same method of wiping on all paper patch loads. BA squeegee on a nylon brush tipped with wool felt with all pulled from container of 20-1 NAPA soluble oil and pushed through with an arsenal patch and jag. I wouldn't go as far to say that I'll never shoot grease grooves again but probably never in a match. Wiping is faster for me and seems to give a very consistent bore condition that I can rely on. Seemed more inconsistent when I tried doing the same for a grease groove bullet. I'm sure it was just me because obviously lots of shooters excel using that method.

Almost a month ago my 38 was finished. I decided on a 12 twist GM barrel. I sent it, along with the action and reamer, to cpa where it was installed and then cut down to 32”. With sights the rifle weighs just under 12 pounds. I ended up getting a paper patch elliptical bullet that is 1.47” long and it is showing some real promise. With my 14:1 alloy they weigh 360 grains. 67 grains of the 3F I have is pushing them around 1400 fps while 64 grains of the 1.5 I have pushed them around 1350. Shot it at some sillywets yesterday it some wind, enough wind to blow some turkeys over. They had no problem at all
Staying on turkeys and it was pounding the rams. Had a
Few really low hits on the rams but they went right down. Shooting the chickens was also really really pleasant when compared to my 45. The next step will be to get out to a match but Friendship isn’t until later in March. I am going to try like hell to get down to Dawsonville because I just don’t think I can wait that long to try and validate this rifle and load.

Ian. Congratulations on your new rifle build. What barrel weight and profile did you use? Tim

First match with the little pea shooter in the books. Had a really bad start on turkeys with only
4 on the first bank and 1 on the second. That was worth the 67 grain 3F load. I was a little disappointed of course but while cleaning between relays I pulled out TONS of hard fouling. First patch patch didn’t want to go through it was so thick. I switch over to the 64 grain 1.5 load and that fixed it. 10 rams 4 chickens and 10 pigs. Really really nice group on the rams with a very tight vertical string. I shot all day without a recoil pad and didn’t miss it at all. I am really happy so far with the way this project has been going. 2 day match at friendship in March should really tell a story.

They were conducive for good shooting. I will try again at Friendship in March where the conditions probably won’t be very good so that should be really interesting especially since the BC of these bullets are slightly higher than my 45s. Using my labradar to calculate B.C. These are .52 where my 45 is .5

Just what are you saying? It's always Mary Poppins and Blue Birds in Friendship. See you soon. I just finished loading for March and April. I'll start on May later today. Just need to load some Trapdoor rounds.

   Yes I am excited. For me it seems like Friendship can be one of the trickiest ranges for me so it will hopefully give us some good insight. Good or bad I will be happy to see everyone and share some good drinks.

Wiilie and Sandra are coming over this afternoon for steaks. I've got a bottle of 15 year old single malt to share. Where are you?

Getting my stuff cleaned up and organized and getting stuff ready for next weekend. Deana is going to do some shooting off the sticks with it and see if she wants to start out with paper patch. I am going to have her see how many aimed shots she can get off in 12 min while using the wipers and such. If she is to slow with the wipers then I will get her a grease groove boolit and start her of with the blow tube until she is comfortable with the mechanics.

Ian - you neglected to mention you won the match in GA. Congrats. A most auspicious start to your season. Especially once you start hitting those turkeys.
