What muzzle velocity are shooters getting from 40-90 BN Sharps cartridges?
I’ll be putting together a rifle with a 1 in 16 twist and a 1.375” PP bullet.

My 40-82 Winchester with a 430 grain bullet chronographed in the 1360's MV.
I would think that you will be over 1400 fps with a 400 grain PP bullet, depending on the powder you are using.

Those that are shooting the 40-90bn at long range, what bullet weight are you using? Is it the 400gr ? Or something heavier like the 430?

The bullet weight for shooting a 40 caliber at LR will depend on the barrel twist.
My 40-82 shot very well at LR with a standard 16 twist, but
it was not dependable at 1K with the 430 grain bullet.

I don’t know if “funny” is the right word, but certainly interesting that no matter the context when it comes to long range shooting twist rate enters the discussion. Some things seem to matter no matter the platform.

any form of rifle shooting is about the bullet bottom line.
this must be delivered by a cartridge capable of getting the job done, and then the rifle must suit the cartridge in that order of importance.
in long range shooting long heavy bullets are superior, hence the subject of twist being mentioned.
in 40 cal, it has been found that a 1.5" long bullet requires a 13" twist to be absolutely reliable at the longer ranges.
it is suspected that a 1.55" bullet will require a 12" twist, but this has not been tested.
a 1.55 bullet has been shot extensively in a 13 twist, and has never gone completely haywire, but has exhibited wobble, and when this happens, vertical occurs.
you can calculate the gyroscopic stability of a 1.5" 40 cal bullet in a 13 twist, on a stability calculator, and then shoot for that same stability in a 16 twist to get the same stability.
in competition, the bullet that suits the 16 twist will give far more wind deflection than the one that suits the 13 twist.
don't blame the caliber for this, blame the bullet.
and if you try a longer bullet in the slower twist, do not blame the calibre for vertical

In my 16 twist 40-90 bn, the .396 415 money bullet cast 16-1 and wrapped in seth cole 55w shoots well to 1000 yards. 94 grains of OE 1f in BACO reformed 45 2.6 cases.

Mr. McDowell, do you have any velocity figures? The books i have put it about 1400 fps or more.

The original bullet weight was 370 grains. So if you stick with that I would imagine your FPS would be well above 1400.

Nope no velocity figures but it is fast
