long range shooting is a strange animal.
in shoots such as this it is all about the aggregate.
you can win the shoot without winning a string, by being consistently good.
no one person seems to win all matches, but some people gravitate to the top end in general.
it would be risky to put money on any one of those before the match.
the plot thickens when you realize that it is actually a team event, with the guy on the gun required to be a shooting machine, and the wind coach being of equal importance in his own field.
all credit should go to the team members on an equal basis.

I really enjoyed being there, it's a good bunch of people who shoot this sport. Sure am glad I finally found this hobby.

Thanks again to the ones who have gone out of their way to help me. Their scores have suffered while trying to help me figure out wind guessing. We certainly had a lot of variable wind at this match that needed guessing!!!!

I don't think any famous felt hats were lost. I believe it was a baseball hat that got sucked up and over the pit wall.

Possibly Dave Gullo did not succumb to the wiles of Mariah the goddess of wind so she became annoyed with him and stole his cap and blew it down range. She was definitely flipping her yellow and red skirts (range flags) hither and yon but Old Dave was wise to her moves.

He had seen them before.

I suspect that part of the reason for success is the brand new Stay-Put Shooting Mat that Gale Boyle delivered to me at the match. I sure like it! I am sure that my old no-name mat would have blown away several times.....

Precisely why The Spotter for the Aggregate Match Winner receives the Top Spotter Award in the AZWINS Matches.

In this case the Steve Rhoades Memorial 1,000 Yard Match, and all Black Powder Target Matches combined to form the IRONMAN Aggregate Award.

And it was Aviator the Newbe to BPTR Shooting that won them both. No one was more surprised than was he.

So now we need to think of Aviator as a Shooting Machine, Eh?

Sad, Dead Eye and Gunlaker could not make it eiher.

In response to those inquiring minds out there about a round count for The Desert International Black Powder Match here is the final count:

Long range for 45-90, 800, 900 & 1,000 yards was 210 rounds. Did not participate in the sight in day which may have added 20 empty cases to the pile.

Midrange for the 44-90, 30 record shots at 500 and 600 yards. 80 empty cases.

Two day 40 animals silhouette 45-70, 132 empty cases but I did do the match day sight in both days.

.22 sight in was after the silhouette matches on the pig swinger, total .22 round count 82 rounds.

Yep, that is over 500 shots fired in ten days.

2022 will probably be similar round count and perhaps a different chronology of matches based on input from shooters that shot 2021.

Correction, the .22 sight in was done on the Chicken swinger.
