Right now my 32-40 marlin as my main gun this year. I shot it at Tappanhill and it did well, went to Topeka and hit rams well but three didn’t go. But I am shooting light loads, 14 grains of 4227 under a 165 grain bullet. I am going to to try a heavier load for rams as I had to do that with my 30-30. And shoot light loads on other three animals

I am assuming that Glenn's question is related to BPCR Silhouette not levergun silhouette. Rams are at 500 meters instead of 200 yards.

I would love to have both woody, but my question was for 500 meter BPCR. I am very happy with my 40-65, but thought a 32-40 might be fun for the grand son. I think he needs to man up and shoot our 40-65 highwalls!

Yes wouldn’t even think about it for bpcr, 38-55 would be minimum!

You're right Kevin. If I can just get him to shoot I'll be happy. Jeanne and I have some really light chicken loads in 40-65 that will be about right for him I think. He loves to shoot 22 BPCR so if I can get him to knock down a few long range targets I think he'll be hooked.

38-55 or 38-50 can be loaded down quite far with pistol powders and loaded up for the ram line with the mini postell. It will also make a fine deer rifle if he gets into that too!!

Thank Matt. He LOVES to deer and hog hunt. He shot his first deer with a bow this season. He was 12 and tells me he doesn't want to shoot girl deer..only bucks. I have food plots and tree stands for him. I have deer come up in the yard, but only get excited when he hunts.

I'm really liking the .357 max Glen with the 216 grain RCBS gas check bullet. The fourteen twist barrel seemed to stabilize that bullet well which I had my doubts about. I need to get out the Ohler and see how fast mine are actually going but the book seems to indicate about 1800 fps.
I think it one of the really great sleeper single shot cartridges out there having been designed for silhouette revolver work. It's a whole new animal in a rifle length barrel!

Just chiming-in here.

The .38-50 (Remington-Hepburn) is easily formed from Krag brass blowing it out in an existing .38-50 Chamber, then a minimum trim to length and mouth chamfer.

My own .32-40 is form from .38-55 brass for a chamber specifically down-up to minimize trimming the sized-down brass and as such is slightly longer than the .32-40 Winchester chamber. Using hard cast bullets (antimony is in the mix) I have downed 500m rams. Just don't bother if there is any head wind.
My turkey and ram loads were with Swiss #3 and fouling was a constant problem, I shelved the project just before the emergence of bore pigs, I was wiping with damp patches which was too time consuming for silhouette.

.32-40 is very mild recoiling, and .38-50 (Rem-Hep) can be as well, there should be plenty of well proven 300gr bullet designs available which would be a minimum bullet for silhouette.

EDIT: . . . for a chamber drawn-up to minimize trimming (using Starline .38-55 brass, run through a FL sizing die and then fire formed to the chamber. This is when the trimming is minimal.
