And the same compression as GOEX is: ???????? 1/2000", 1/200th of an inch??? or what?

With the addition of the recommended additional .030 wad, compression is .355" using a Shiloh compression die. So I guess it isn't the same as the GOEX, as I was only using .030" wad. I have also been using standard Winchester LR primers in lieu of the CCI magnums, not sure I am a good enough shot to tell the difference.

Use the same compression on Olde E as any other grade of Goex. It I the same components as regular Goex ececpt 40 grain sizes are in each grade to juice up the velocities

If it is any consolation High Desert Hunter, my incrementally increasing compression test loads next will be .330" and .360"
also with WLR Std Primers, for OE 1 1/2, in 45-70 with 530 grain PJ Creedmoor 1-16.. For this lot 76 grains so far.

OH, BTW, watch for spring back from compression after you pass about .280" Recheck for COAL before final seating of bullet.

Got side tracked onto another pressing project so the test will have to wait.

I add powder to increase the compression not wads.

My last GOEX 2F loads in the 45-90 were .400" compression with the Saeco #745 at 1-20 FGM210M primers Great to 1,000 yards.

I thought so at the time also High Desert Hunter, however, on advice of more experienced long range shooters I increased powder until I got the velocity and accuracy necessary to shoot at 1,000 yards, AND, with what I had to work with at the time that produced the desired result and wound up being .400" compression.

Sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do.

Proof is on the target, years of reloading have shown me that across a broad spectrum of calibers. Some are inherently easier than others. This digging into reloading black powder has been a great adventure, and it is running parallel with my adventure with a modern rifle I put together this year. I dedicate about 3x the amount of time to the Sharps, a lot of that is due to being much more involved in the entire process. With the Sharps, I find my eyesight to be a big LIMFAC, my 20" H x 30" L steel target gets difficult much past 325 yards. Hopefully as the temps fall out of the 90s in the coming month, it will clear the air a little and let me get to 400+ yards.

So I was mostly happy with the results from today's experiments. The loads that had only a .030 wad seemed to be more accurate, but with the 15mph wind I would be disingenuous to say I was sure. Took the chronograph out for another rifle, so I ran some Old Enysford across the screens for the first time, average was 1265 SD of 7. I shot a couple at a large target sitting at 992 and was pleased my WAG on the sight setting was so close, managed one for 2. I will be playing with this seating depth more, I may even try 70.5 grains of powder. Only downside was just a few more small flakes of leading just forward of the chamber. Temperature was 94, humidity was pretty high at 30%, I wiped with Murphy's and water between shots, 2 patches after letting the barrel cool. I will try and post a picture of the steel plate a little later.

If you think 30% is high humidity.
Come to Missouri

Gary,
I lived in South Carolina, I retired from the Air Force and got a job here 15 years ago, I do not miss humidity. Thanks for all of your help by the way. Will be trying out a new lube next month!

Load OE like Swiss.
Ladder load work up using 1.5 Swiss and 2F OE Top 2 is with a Sharps profile bullet. The bottom 2 groups was shot with a Metford profile bullet.
The OE .07 and the Swiss same weight as OE .065"
I think this Shiloh can do better with the rifle in a vise. :D
A lot of times your better off with no compression.

Olde Eynsford,

Compressed about .380. 103 grs. 3 wad stack. Dual Diameter bullet PP or, my 540 gr PP Money bullet.

The DDEPP bullet top score at 1000 yards. 5 consecutive 36 inch bulls btw.

The money bullet is .446 sized to .445 both with Seth Cole 55W.

That’s a midrange Scope prone National Championship btw.

Top score at 600 yards the first day.

And those who say you can’t compress Swiss try .400 in a 38-50. Works fine. Got another of those midrange Nationals champion scope medals. For that.

Any day we wake up and the humidity is under 60% we are happy. Several early morning walks were started at 85% humidity.

I can handle high temps..but not High Humidity and high temps combined.

Kurt,
Pretty sure my eyes are not capable of that kind of accuracy! I need to retire so I can spend more time working with this rifle!
