22 long rifle ammunition

We have found RWS R-50 to be the best ammo in our 1885 Winchesters that sport Shilen barrels with tight ,match chambers. . It is very expensive at
200 bucks a brick but performs well in our rifles.

I have read that Norma tac 22 lr ammo is RWS rifle packaged differently and is half the cost of RWS R-50. I have learned my lesson about using different
22 ammo for different animals at a match, but this may be my practice / warm up ammo when i shoot matches. Same lube , same velocity.

What 22 ammo do you use ??

In this order in my Shilen rachet-rifled barrel:
Lapua Midas+ (no need to weigh-sort - it all weighs the same).
Laupa Center-X (weigh-sorted)
Federal Gold Medal Match (weigh-sorted)
Norma Match (weigh-sorted)
Have some Eley Match to test. Will weigh up a brick to see if it needs to be sorted.

In my spotter's lined (TJ's liner) barrel Norma TAC shots really well, except for flyers about every 20th shot or so. Better than my weigh-sorted Norma Match does in his barrel. I suspect that weigh-sorting TAC would get rid of the flyers.

Finding the right ammo for a 22 is about like finding the right ammo for your BP rifle. They are very particular about what will shoot into a sub-MOA group. Especially at 200m.

I shot that in all my 22 rifles until I ran out. I think it's pretty good ammo.

True Glenn.

We were shooting great groups here at the house at 100 meters with cheaper ammo...but when we went to 200 meters some 22 rounds opened up more than others.

I have what Dan Zimmerman called a tight barrel. He profiled, threaded, and chambered a Ron Smith stainless for my Winchester Low Wall. He told me that he didn't think it would shoot very well. I ran as many different lots and brands through it that I could obtain. (Before the current drought.) Eley ten-x it is. One brick at a time and it does not seem to be lot sensitive. I've got enough on hand now for a couple of years. If any of you have followed my .22 scores for this and last year, I have habitually shot 28-29 laydowns in the .22 Bpcr game. (I've probably jinxed myself for our Regional in two weeks.) From Killough Sports, I've been able to keep supplied and they have held the price. Last I looked, the Ten-X was running $18 and change / box of 50. I have been shooting Eley Team for the chickens and pigs, but am about out of it and have not found any for sale for over a year.

Your rifle will tell you what it likes the best.

I shot these targets when I got my new 12# CPA .22. It has a heavy 28" Douglas Premium barrel with a tight CPA chamber.
When I got this rifle I shot several different types of .22 ammo to see what it shoots the best and I really cant say that it's a picky rifle with what ever I shot through it. I don't remember what the range was with the cardboard target if it was 50 or 100 yards. The white paper I know was 50 yards and the small circle is a 1/4" and that target was shot using the Norma match I settled on. I ordered two cases on a Black Friday sale :D Less than $200. a case. :D

I also shot several other high end .22 ammo but I couldn't justify them over the Norma.

The orange stickers are 1-1/2" and the diamond is 3/8" point to point.
These targets were shot off sand bags on the bench.

Dan barreled our 22 1885s. They have a very tight chamber and shoot MUCH better than we can. They will shoot any 22 ammo well...but the R-50 is better than anything we've tried. We did find out that CCI Standard velocity will NOT chamber w/o a great deal of pushing.

That is some great record keeping right there. I had books of targets on each gun years ago. It kept me from repeating mistakes I had made loading and buying ammo.

I found very little difference out to 100 yards. My testing was done at 200 yards. That is where I saw the difference.

Yep. In our .22RF game 200yd is where the rubber meets the road.

Targets shot today in gusty winds, up to 20 mph gusts. 50 yds, SK match, 10 shots, Ruger rifle.

Woody,

I don't shoot my .22 often at 200 yards. I looked through my target folders and only found these two targets shot out to 200 with the CPA'

The bottom target has 2-4 shot groups with a sight change. That really was a surprise that the bulk Fed Auto held in that good.

There is a difference shooting at 200 over 100 with a .22, but this rifle has shown that it will just about shoot any of the different makes of .22 shells.
I have a .22 Browning low wall that is very particular what it shoots well as well as my 52 Winchester.
But the CPA has a 1" at the muzzle 28" barrel is what makes the difference why it handles the different ammo well.
