Last weekend I shot a .22 silhouette match and my rifle has a DZ scope mounted on it. Shooting the turkeys and rams I centered on the swingers and went for score. The first two shots just went over the back. I lowered the sight 1 MOA and stayed on them down the line but missed counting the first two misses 3 out of 10 shots set up on the bank on both of the rams and turkeys. I talked about it after the match with a couple shooters to get their thought about this.
During the early practice time when I got the new mounted scope zeroed I didn't think much about it finding a zero at all the ranges I mostly shot just the swingers and one lay down.
What is going on?????

Is the swinger lower than the targets ? I find I do the same thing with aperture sights when the swinger is significantly lower than the targets in off hand work.

Did you find your natural aim point and find your zero ? It is frustrating to chase sight settings when your natural point of aim is askew. It took me years of shooting until I understood ‘ natural point of aim’ and how to adjust for each position . I only ask because it was such an enlightening experience .

Kurt, is there Parallax adjustment on the scope? Or is that what you guys are referring to when finding your zero?

The swingers are higher than the leydowns and the are on a post. I just started shooting silhouetts and I had to switch to the scope sitting.
I can understand doing this using the apertures but the scope I see the reticles clear and centered. Granted, I'm not solid in the sitting position as I was prone but if the shot breaks good on the swinger and the laydowns I question two shots in a row going over and having to drop 1 MOA to hit center again.

My cheek weld is the same and in the past I have let a round go while shouldering the rifle and still hit black before coming down on the sights
I understand chasing the sight settings, That was why I missed the first two on different banks twice.

Charlie I check the parallax when I switch from close range switching to long. This scope is new, first time out, and I set the parallax on the HP turkeys at 385 yards and checked it on the .22 pigs at 100 and the hairs where solid at 100.

I more or less put it on shooting off the sticks sitting, to much of a chance getting pushed off center but like a couple guys said, it's an optical illusion when the swinger is above the laydowns.

The reason I put this question up is I had a problem at the Quigley match with my eyes. I woke up Sunday morning at early dawn and looked up at the skylight when it disappeared when my eyes centered on it and I saw a dark red halo around the black when I moved off center of the dim light coming through the sky light. Closed the right eye and checked the left eye and the same. Both in the center of my vision. I had the eyes check when I got home and the Doc said I has some heavy floaters tear loose in the center vision in both eyes but the red halo concerned him. He asked what did you do, I told him I was at a blackpowder shoot and it was hot with the temp as high as 115º one day and above 100 on other days and he thought the heat might have raised the inner eye pressure causing this but he was uncertain and advised me to rest the eyes and not shoot the heavy recoiling rifle till after the next follow up so I shot the .22
Well looking through the scope or anytime I see that floater very plain dancing around thinking that this is what might have caused those missed shots.
I could not see the Quigley targets when they were in the morning shadows through the tang sights the dark spots are so heavy.

So this was your first match shooting in the sitting position? This is a new scope that you are not used to shooting? Hmm...........

I think trying to hold dead center on a ram is impossible. You need a finer aiming point. Try the hole in the horn, try the turkey's head, try the ear on the pig. The only animal I try to hold dead center on when shooting scope is the chicken, however I know of one individual that holds on the chickens foot Try experimenting with different aiming points. For some years now with the scope I have been using the tip of the nose of the Pig and the Ram as an aiming point. For Turkeys I quarter the leg, this allows me to adjust up/down, left/right without trying to remember where the last shot broke. For Chickens like you I just try to hold center but when I come off the swinger I dial up two and left one. Sometimes this helps correct my errors. LOL

We're all getting older Kurt and we just got to do what we can to stay in the game. Keeping on having fun my friend.

Head position on the stock, will be different when sighting on the taller swinger. Also Ammo quality can really come in play at 200 meters.

Yup Paul, getting old aint for sissies. At 81 I'm finding that out but then again I just look old for being 26 LOL.


No Smoke I been forced to shoot off a stool for several years now but after the last Q I found that I need to get used to using a scope. Been fighting the glass for several years putting it on and off and ready to throw it in the scrap pile on and off.

Your right Kenny, but in this case this is not what's going on. When I got the sight setting during practice I stayed on the swinger at all 4 lines chickens through the rams.

I will get this worked out.
