I'm with Barry on the point of aim. I do my best when I have a point of aim and not shoot at the whole animal. I hold armpit on pigs and Rams and the breast side of the Turkey leg where the leg meets the body.

When my eyes are clear, I try to shoot one side or other of the chicken leg...I Know with my wobble that's impossible, but the finer aiming points give me a finer focus and I tend to shoot better.

Ammo could be a problem also. I was shooting sk standard velocity and was fortunate enough to be squadded with the Great Brian Chilson. I had the up and down problem and Brian looked at my ammo and told me I needed better ammo. I bought RWS R-50 and my scores really went up.

This past weekend at Smithmoor, there was lots of this going on. No idea, no explanation, and very frustrating. I experienced it myself several times.

Most people don't like to hear it, but I still think most of it goes back to shooting skill. You missed, it happens, and it is rarely the guns fault.
Sight picture, trigger pull, and follow through. I'm betting the problem is right there someplace.

I'm with you on that Cody, I get to shoot so infrequently these days that every time is just like the first time. By the time I'm starting to feel comfortable on the gun the shoots over.

Cody, I did get to a Silhouette match recently, first one this year, and I had nine pigs down. I wanted to see that last pig fall so bad I 'gophered' and of course I missed. Dumbest mistake in the book for a guy who's been doing this for so long. Operator Error plain and simple.

Present posters pose a serious question? Just exactly who expects to hit the animal you shoot at every single time?

Those are your targets, you can shoot them or not shoot them any old way you want to.

If you go ahead and miss the first target in the bank you got that missing thing over with and can go about your business.

This approach doesn't work so well if you are shooting at refrigerators in landfills, however, a miss is still a miss regardless of how difficult it was to miss.

Zack, I think you've just about enough. Brian is just taking advantage of a 'target rich environment' as Woody would call it.

What I was asking when I just made a gray spot on the swinger it was centered on the swinger. I shot quite a few before going for score. I have a lot of time to shoot all 10 critters using a .22. When I broke the shot on the first and second turkey and ram the break was good when the shot was fired and the misses were close centered over the top. I came down one minute and hit center or close on the rest of the bank.

I don't have a problem admitting that I just cant shoot as well as I could in the past and I know my rifle is capable doing better than I can.
When I see just a gray spot centered on the swinger shooting 5 or 6 shots looking through the scope I can see where they hit at the close range the .22 silhouettes are. I can see where my miss will be when I make a bad break.


One thing for sure, shooting critters is fun. Wish I would have started this game sooner.
There is one more match at Alma this season and that will be it till next April.

Well, I think Wasserberger has it right about the head position change on the stock from swinger to target elevation , as the cause Kurt.
With apertures I always thought lighting the probable cause which should not be an issue with scope but head position shift would do it too.

Yes that would do it Mike and it would be amplified with incorrect parallax using a scope.
