40-70 Dedicated PP Chamber

A friend of mine has purchased a rifle in 40-70 with a PP chamber. What die do you use to size the new brass so you can get it in the chamber to be fireformed?

FL should work just fine. if its smaller than that your going to need a custom die set.

All my tight chambers will take a full length sized case.
But you wont need any dies after only maybe a taper crimp die. None of mine change shape after firing. Of course this does depend on the chamber and your bullet.
My bullet moulds are cut to slip a patched bullet into snuglt.

We are talking more than just a tight chamber, it is cut just for a PP bullet, no way to use a .459 GG bullet.

I would think it would be impossible put a .459 bullet in a 40/70, might try a .408

I don’t believe a .459 bullet will fit in any 40-70 chamber no mater what it is cut for.
You got a number wrong in either your first post or your second.

I have a Shiloh 40 70 ss and the 40 by Shiloh is .408. I trim to 2.495 to avoid any overlap, and never have to size the cases.
I load PP but found that GG and NO cleaning for a 5 shot group is better. I use a VERY light factory crimp to hold the bullet.
65 Swiss 1 1/2 weighed, one card 060, two newspaper wads over that and die seat.

None of my rifles will chamber a grease groove bullet. They stop about 1/2 way.
All my brass has been formed with rcbs dies or redding. No customs.
You dont need to expand the necks to seat a bullet.

Rcbs as well as Lyman full length sizing dies will usually squeeze new cases down enough for fire forming new brass the 1st time. In my original style 40-90 SBN chamber full length sized wasn't quite enough for the reformed 2.6 starline needed a little squeezing with a 40 sw tungsten sizer for the fireform load. Once they are fireformed your good to go, oil up your sizer die and put it away.
