Black powder is easy enough to make. Powdered charcoal, potassium nitrate, and sulphur. The KNO3 is main ingrediant of several stump removers. You can condense the sulphur in a retort when you smelt galena to get lead. Useable flint can be found most anywhere.

Pretty sure potassium nitrate is also the main ingredient in tannerite.

It would actually be pretty cool to have a modern style flintlock rifle (and shotgun too)…faster twist for heavy bullets, laminate stock with straight comb, pistol grip, rubber recoil pad, decent peep sight…

actually , a guy could rig an electric ignition to replace the actual mechanical flint ignition...
For example like a glow plug used in model airplane engines

Kind of sounds like the Remington Model 700 EtronX!

They already have an ignition system similar to what you suggested.

JonnyV, have you ever fired a flintlock? Omg!.

Nope but it sure sounds fun! Up until two years ago I had never fired real BP either. Then I got a Uberti ‘76 in 45-60 and started experimenting with substitute BP. A Ruger Old Army soon followed and my smithy gave me half a can of Goex 3f.

After last years Quigley I knew that the use of smokeless in the 45-70 was a fools errand. Now I own three Italian single shots, a really nice Shiloh on order, and boxes arrive weekly with more and more stuff to aid in making the switch.

Branching out to flintlock weapons seems a natural extension of what I’m doing. Already asked the smith fir a price.

I’ve been riding that “fools errand” for about 20 years. I shoot smokeless in a Shiloh 45/70. Killed two antelope, one large bull elk, and two buffalo. None of them complained about being killed with smokeless.🤣

Guess I should’ve specified that I was talking about shooting in Quigley matches… Lol!

Smokeless works good for other applications.

well, just a "sparker" like in gas stoves these days. But, you couldn't call it a flintlock. You'd have to cale it a eSpark lock or something like that. The military has been using electric ignition for many years. If I remember right the 20mm on the A-4Ds I worked on in the Marines used electric ignition. Not having been in ordinance I haven't a clue as to how it worked.

Forget the rocks, that's really an emergency.

Buy now, 5000 RWS percussion caps for $75. Stock as many as you think you will ever use. Get 25-50 SS nipples, but those could be made.

2 or 3 rifles, a couple of shotguns. You're set to ride out the.................

Might grab a few traps and snares too. Several really good knives and stones.

Actually, I'm probably not going to live long enough to make it worth worrying about.

Where can you find 5000 RWS caps for $75? and don't forget the shipping cost and hazmat fee. Last ones I saw here were $13 for 100 and that was before the current madness.

DSMTEI on a Google search for "percussion caps". It came and said free shipping, case of 5000 $75.

No idea about the co.

Being one of those new guys mentioned previously, one thing I’ve learned is patience. This is my first and most likely only Shiloh rifle. I’m one week shy of 18 months into my wait for the “Letter”. Hopefully, in the next couple of months I will finalize my order ? I browse this forum practically every day and hopefully I’m gathering data that will be useful when finally get into this sport/hobby. For starters, I’ve purchased a half dozen or so books recommended here. Between those books and information here, I’ve slowly begun to gather some of the tools and paraphernalia to get into this.
I’ve found that using the various vendors “Notify me when this item is back in stock” has paid off for me in a few instances. Just this last Friday, I received such an email from one of them and today I just received a Fedex shipment notification for 10 pounds of Swiss 1.5F that is supposed to arrive Thursday.
Note they were out of stock before the next morning!
In the last several months, this has also worked for me with a Forster Coax Press, and 300 pieces of Starline 45-70 brass. Mr. Brooks was kind enough to make me a Creedmoor mould that he said would work excellently in a Shiloh Sharps rifle. I’ve also bought a Lee 20 Lb. Lead pot, Lyman & Lee Dies, a Shiloh Inline for 45-70. I even bought 40 rounds of BACO 535 Postell ammo to begin with. By the way that ammo was also purchased after BACO sent me an email notification.
As a final note…living here in Nevada I occasionally get “Lucky” as I did about 3 months ago. Hit for enough to buy a new Miroku Winchester 1886 45-70 Deluxe and with what was left over…I went to one of those Vendors and paid $170 for 1000 CCI BR2 Large Rifle Primers. Yeah, yeah I know that’s almost twice the list price but that same vendor is now selling the same primers for over $350!
Things are crazy but hopefully by the time my rifle is ready I’ll have collected enough to get me through my first 1000 rounds? I realize that isn’t many but it should be enough for me to settle down and enjoy this retirement present to myself.
