As I do a considerable bit of silver soldering, I've actually considered going this route if all else fails.

I looked this up in George Nonte's book of case conversions and their are two cases, both are Sharps . One is 2 7/16s and the other 2 5/8s. The smaller can be formed from 45-90 cases and the longer from 45 2 6/10s cases. Monte says form the cases using a 44/60 Sharps Die until the breech closes and fire form. He says use a .443 dia bullet but doesn't say if it's a GG or PP.
Be good idea to run a chamber cast as you mentioned.

I shot a .44-2-5/8 BN (90) for several years now. I have two. The caliber is a fine caliber with good accuracy if you tolerate the recoil it generates. It's more than enough for deer and it will drop a Bison at 180 yards with one shot and a 50 yard chase.
Took my first Bison in North Dakota using the Shiloh.

A .45 caliber case is not the best for the .44 Sharps with a .518" base diameter. The case below was my attempt when I got my first but back then I could get Bell .44 basic brass with the proper base diameter and later on Jamison made the proper brass as wells Huntington in CA. but they also used the Bell brass and put their head stamp on them.
If yours is the .44-90 BN Remington Special than the cases can be made using .45-2.6 brass. I think the Rem Sp. used around a .505"-6" diameter base.

When you make your chamber cast to see if the chamber is a Rem Spl, or the Sharps and you don't have any cases if it's a Sharps let me know and I will give you 20 so you can go deer hunting using that shooter.

Yeah, the head diameter of both 45-90 and 45 2.6 is .5 and on the 44-90, 2.6 Sharps is .516 . The rim diameters on the Sharps .45's is .597 and on the 44's is .625 from 6th addition of Ammo Encyclopedia. Rim thickness is .065 on the .45's and .070 on the 44's.

I never saw where he'd done a chamber cast to determine which he has?
It would still be easier to buy the Remington if it turns out to be the Sharps version, and reform it, and shorten it, than to start with something else needing more work, wouldn't it?

Not necessarily, yeah I think a chamber cast 1st thing is a good idea. If you look at Donnelly's " handloader's manual of cartridge coonversions" and compare the 44-90 SBN (2 5/8"/2.625) head dia. at .517" to the 44-90 Rem Special at 2 7/16"/2.43" a head dia. of .5o6" you see the Rem chamber is smaller. Kurt allready included a photo of what happens using the wrong brass. Use the right brass or don't expect a trouble free outcome. Don't advocate otherwise. Bobw
