Finally got out to do some shooting!! Got some projectiles from Mr. Seitz. They seemed to do really well at 100yd for initial load test, so today I tried them at 200yd. Total was .14.011" Would have been better but, I felt the need to start turning the knobs

Load as follows...
CPA
40-70SS
Fed210M
80.5gr 1.5 swiss
.060 poly wad
Jim 403371E bullet

Had a bunch of loads for different rifles languishing around here for the last couple months.
Thought I'd better get out and get them shot up and at least put one of them on paper to close out the Postal Match..
Several showed lots of promise even in the wind we had.
This was only one I got to score.
16# bull barrel Shiloh, Fire forming cases. still .005 longer than chamber.
I didn't twist knobs, so factor out the wind and the shooter and it looks like it has a little promise.
27" so Dag doesn't get last in the irons !!!
Forgot to take a picture of this one, and the only picture I took, DD would have a heyday with.

Brian,

Sorry that I did not participate this winter. It has been rough walking on uneven ground with the broken foot. I still have a problem with it, it's not healing too well.
Besides it's just been too cold for these old bones for some reason this winter.

So here I am, dragging myself home from the 1,000 yard range after 6+ hours of intensive rifle practice having endured ambient temperatures of up to 81 F within the expanse of the great Sonoran Desert feeling in need of some refreshment and rest only to see that Aviator has been valiantly out in the freezing cold on snow covered environs with a brand new, (made by Aviator), rifle and while shivering in the subhuman cold of the Indiana barrens has fired a most impressive first target. With grease groove bullets no less. This could very likely prove to be a very satisfying first date with a very fine companion for this relatively new shooter

Wonder how that rifle is going to shoot once the barrel gets broken in? Good chance he will discover how difficult it is to measure one hole groups 8)

And No, that is not mirth, it is positive speculation.

What are you talking about DD? It's balmy here in Indiana this week. I'm even at work in my shop without the stove going. Can't wait to see how Steve's new High Wall looks. Obviously it shoots.

Aviator,
LOL, it was in the 50's here yesterday and I was making Maple Syrup with just a T shirt on yesterday. :D

That is a fine looking target for just getting started with a new rifle. I hope that it will keep them that good or better as you work with it.

There is something about the 82 grain loads. I see it works very well when I develop loads in the .45-70, ..45-2.4 and the .44-2.6. 81 to 83 grains have always looked good even when a couple of those shells will hold more powder.

Thanks, Ian!
Couldn't keep up with Distant Thunder and his paper-patch bullets though!

Primary use will not be silhouette, as it is nearly 15 lbs. I hope that it turns out to be a good long range target rifle. A 34 inch barrel 1.2 inch diameter is not a light barrel!

But, I also built up a highwall for silhouette which will make iron sight weight, and am waiting for nicer weather to get back to working up a load. It has a 30 inch 1.14 inch diameter barrel (45-70, Kreiger 17 twist).

Steve,

Any way you look at it that's a darn nice group even if it was shot with greasers! Seriously, nice shooting!

I'm a big believer in a heavy barrel for a long-range BPTR. My Hepburn weighs 14 1/2+ pounds and it's all in the barrel. It seems very forgiving even when I'm not at my best. That rifle should do well for you.

thanks to everyone that participated again this year.
Looks Like DT and MrE were the big winners--(not because they had the high scores, but because they shot the most)
