If you were going to make 40-70 SS out of 9.3x74R which brand of brass would you use, Hornady, Norma, Nosler, PPU? Cost aside. Which has more case capacity? I can turn rims and neck turn if necessary. I know Buffalo arms has stretched 30-40 Krag sometimes but I haven't had a good experience with stretched brass.

I use Norma in my original 40-70SS, but that is because it is actually chambered for the 40-70 Ballard. I also have some RWS but not sure that is available anymore. In my Remington 40-70 SS I use stretched 30-40 brass and have never had any problems with it. In my 40-70 SS Shiloh I use Hornady 405 and some BELL 405, but only because they came with the rifle.

My 40 cal. 2 1/2 uses Hornady 405 Winch. cases. The chambering was done with the fore knowledge that this was the brass that would be used.

I bought (150) in 2010. Then 2-years later I bought another (150). Those are still in unopened boxes. Of the original (150) I have (139) left. All cases are annealed at the end of each year. Never have had a case mouth split. Experiments with neck turning and loading die “adjustments” and giving away samples, account for the (11) missing cases.

The nice thing about the 405 cases is they just need to be trimmed to length, permitting you to get a precise case fit in the chamber.

made from 30 40 craig and work perfectly . get the ones for the Shiloh chamber not the original chamber.
I have fired mine many times and trim only occasionally. anneal once in a blue moon.

In answer to your question the ppu is the easiest and least brittle to use. All the others are good brass but finding any of it might be a chore.
I would like to try some norma just to see how it would be.

I have two .40-70SS Hepburns, and 4 Ballards in .40-70 Ballard, and use .405 Hornady for all of them. But I also have a Ballard in .40-85 Ballard I use 9.3x74R brass for, and I bought 500 pcs. of it when Nosler had a big sale of $14.95 per box of 25 a few years ago.
I thought I'd give a try at shortening the 9.3x74R brass, in case I ever needed to use it. So cut one down and did the work to fit it to one of my .40-70 chambers. It worked OK to fit, but the rims are a fair bit smaller, and it's not hard to let the rim slip past the extractor if you get a little careless when chambering the case. So I'll only use it if I get desperate.

with the hornady 405 cases, I can get 80gr of 1.5f swiss with .060 left in the case.

BA brass, I just loaded 70 Swiss 1 1/2 to try. usual load is 65.
409 375 BA mold.
over my usual load, but the bullet just misses the lands. want to see if that has an effect.
the 65 prints in 2 inches or under at 100, which for my eyes is fine.
