Cumberland Riflemen BPTR & 22BPTR Mid-range

This is where you can place your scores from the matches. It uses an excel spread sheet! If you send me your sheet of scores I can put it on the forum and provide a link where everyone can view it.

Cumberland Riflemen BPTR & 22BPTR Mid-range

Post by SSShooter »

Thirteen stalwart shooters (we had one scratch due to a broken rib) stepped to the line this morning for our 1st BPTR mid-range match of the season. The day started with a temp around 50F and cloudy skies. The clouds soon thinned and by the time the 2nd relay at 200yd was firing we were being warmed by mostly sunny skies. The breeze was mild, but was enough to move you out of the 10-ring if you weren’t paying attention. We had no 100’s at 200yd, which was unusual for our match, and was likely a testament to being the first match of the season. The two top scores of 97-2X, by CarlL & TomM were identical with the same number of X’s (2), 10’s (5) & 9’s (3).
By the time we moved to the 300yd line it was mostly sunshine and we were feeling warm. However, after a week of rain there was plenty of moisture in the ground and the mirage was starting to run and the wind was picking up. Good seeing went down accordingly and calling conditions became more of a challenge as big, puffy white clouds started moving in and scores were down across the board. Now being mostly cloudy, the breeze continued to build and it was feeling quite cool and jackets returned. VinceD’A was atop the leaderboard at 300 with a nice 96-3X.
Again, by the time we moved to the 600yd line the broken clouds made the winds & mirage highly variable as the sun ducked in and out. If one did not fire during their “condition” it quickly went away and the windage dials were being turned rapidly by all. MikeB prevailed at 600yd with an 82-1X.
Congratulation to Carl Leisinger, the overall match winner with a 271-3X, followed by Michele D’Alessandro with a 265-0X and Dave Harrison with a 264-4X. Good shooting in some trying conditions.
As mentioned, being our first match of the season both shooters & spotters had some ‘rust’ to work thru. That, added to what became quite tricky conditions, kept scores well down from what we will see later in the season.
After the match we gathered at the 600yd bench for hoagies & sodas and to bemoan our collective scores and to congratulate Carl Leisinger, the overall match winner, and to welcome Josh Bencivengo, a 1st-time shooter who did very well under Carl’s guidance at his first match. It’s great to add a new, young (25?) shooter to our sport.
Also, our matches will be shot under the auspices of the new BPTRA group this season. Go to https://bptra.org/ to read about/join the BPTRA, an association dedicated to our black powder target rifle shooting. We will get everyone that is interested caught up on the group at the May & June matches. There is no requirement for anyone to join any group to shoot our matches. All are welcome to join the fun.

Following our lunch break and a quick 5-minute rain shower, 10 shooters adjourned to the 200yd line where we shot a 22RF (any safe rifle, any sights, any position) match on the 200yd, 300yd (reduced to 200yd) and 600yd (reduced to 200yd) targets. By the time we started firing at 2:45 the sun was shining brightly and the breeze was “brisk” and variable. But, the mirage was a total soup and even with the largest, brightest spotting scope it was nearly impossible for either spotters or shooters to see their bullet holes. We would occasionally have good enough “seeing” to see a few holes, but this was very much the exception. As a result, each relay had a 5 minute sight-in period after which we walked down to see our hits and adjust accordingly. We then fired 30 shots in 25-minutes, 10 on each scored target. What we all expected to be a competitive, but simple match became a real challenge with the heavy mirage and very switchy breeze. A true challenge for both shooter & spotter.
Even with the morass of mirage and twitchy winds the match was very competitive, with the top two scores separated by 1-point and the top three by only six.
Congratulations to Gary Ireland for the overall MW with Carl Leisinger only 1-pt back followed by Dave Wiese. Gary Ireland was the MW at 200yd & 300yd distances while Glenn Davis won the 600yd target.
Three of the top four scores were shot with a ‘traditional’ falling block rifle and our relatively low-power scopes.
We will have enough daylight by our May match that we will likely pull and mark targets rather than attempt to see thru the mirage.

Our next match is Saturday, May 14. Look forward to seeing everyone then.
