I prefer the MTM HL-50 Deluxe Flip Top cases with the nice black latches. Interestingly, the ONLY difference between the large and small caliber boxes is the size of the internal insert, yet the smaller caliber versions are as much as $5 less ($9.99 for the MTM HL-50 RL-24 vs $15.99 for the MTM HL-50 XL-24.) The only problem with the large caliber boxes is that a 45-90 paper patched cartridge will not fit nose up (my preference) and still allow the lid to close. Since the insert is removable, I designed and 3D printed an insert that sits low enough to allow longer (3.7" OAL) cartridges to fit nose up AND short enough that a spent cartridge exceeds the top of the insert so that I can easily remove them individually. I have found that spent cartridges on the large boxes will drop so low that I need to tip the box over to get them out. I just buy the small caliber, much less expensive MTM HL-50 RL-24 and remove and replace the insert with my 3D printed version.

If you want a good ammo box you almost have to make your own or get a good Woody box.
I gave up with looking for boxes you can sit the shell upright or one deep enough to close the lid. I have a table saw so I just make my own boxes.

Kurt, have you considered setting your shooting activities aside and focus on ammo box creation for the masses?

I too gave up looking for a stout plastic box that allowed the .45-90 and -110 rounds to stand up and not rattle around. So the table saw came into play as you did. I bored the holes on my mill, makes a hell-ava mess, but worth the effort. The end result with metal hinge, handle and latch is superior. I used Baltic Birch and painted the boxes white to reflect the sun/heat.

For wooden boxes, there are also the ones Shiloh sells. Last time I was in Big Timber I stopped in to buy a box that holds 200 rounds. It'll hold any of my .40 or .45 cal rounds base down.

KW,
Yes I use the mill also for boring the holes in the block.
I change the blocks for the caliber and they won't tip . I also have some memory foam I put under the lid so the cases don't rattle around even if the box tips over the bullets stay put.

I just bought 4 more of the MTM RMLD-15-16T for $8.75 ea., free shipping on fleabay. They hold a 45-70 case base down, and no handle to lure you in to a false sense of security! They will also hold 50-90's nose down.

If you like plastic there is another option. J&J Products makes 20 round plastic slip cases that are higher quality than the MTM cases. They will hold any .45 cal rounds base down, even a .45-110 with a shallow seated PP bullet. These are what I use when bringing ammo to the range for practice and load testing.

I have a bunch of MTM plastic 50 round boxes that came with a rifle I'd bought ( included 700 rounds of brass all stored in MTM cases!). They hold .45-70 with bases down and are OK, but don't hold ammo with bullets seated out much. Also the part that keeps the lids closed is quite weak. If you pick them up by the handle eventually you'll probably dump that ammo on the ground.
