My Shiloh 1874 is in .40-70 Straight. Bought it mainly for silhouette but joined a club that shoots long range out to 1000 yards.
In my experience, results depended on how strong the wind got. Calm conditions, it's no worries at all. I've even put two consecutive shots nearly touching on the buffalo at Whittington, (It had just been painted and I had Gullo as a witness), but when the wind gets up, different story. Out to 700, I found it manageable but in strong winds, I was running out of windage on the sight. I had Steve Brooks make me up a custom mold that casts @ 440gr. With 70gr of 2F Swiss powder behind it, that improved my results a bit. I persevered for a couple of years but in strong winds I was still running out of windage at the longer yardages, 800, 9000 and 1000 yards.
I solved the problem by getting a .45-90.

Yup, 40-70 SS will do OK at 1000 yards if you aren't fighting a wind. I used my 40-70 SS Rolling Block on a 1000 yard gong and could do pretty well. Had an Axtel mid range sight though and it wasn't really enough elevation. I had to hold a little over the gong, but did get consistant hits once I figured out the hold over. That was witha 410 grain bullet.

I have campaigned a 40-90 bn, the cartridge holds up well to 1000, but if I were to try that again it would be in a 15 lb or heavier rifle.
I like the 44's and 45's much better.

My .40-82 silhouette with 450 gr gg money bullet works well up to around 8-900 yds, a big wind is not its friend.

Shot one (1) 800/900/1000yd match with my 40-65 (32" GM barrel/14.5" twist) and was exactly middle-of-the-pack for a result. If memory serves I had two (2) diggers in a 45-shot match. My load was a 439gr Money bullet (BACo mold) with 68gr of 2F Swiss in Win cases with a LR primer. I felt I was at no disadvantage other than having never shot at the longer distances before. The breeze was ~10mph, but was quite consistent, so fairly easy to call. I definitely had to wipe with two wet patches as it was bright sun and 80F+ temp. Barrel was "cooking" after about 5-shots.

I shot one long range match with my Shiloh 40/70 SS. It has the 14" twist. I shot a 440 grain Creedmoor style grease groove bullet.I'm not sure of the load but it was about 67 grains of Swiss 1 1/2. I shot right with best scores at 800 yards. At 900 I only got one in the black. Without a spotter/coach conditions were changing faster than I was able to read them, get in the gun, find the target, and get the shot off. Most shots were left and right, all scored but not well. I had two dirt diggers at 1000 but scored higher than at 900. I finished just below the middle of the pack, not last. I had a poor pit guy also. He was slow and kept running up wrong scores. I had to call him on the radio to check the score multiple times. If I try it again I think I'll use my 45/70.

My wife shot a .40-2 5/8 SBN for a couple of years. When I had the rifle rebarreled to .45- 2.6 she did much better.

Did you notice the immediate improvement on being able to spot your target impacts and backstop misses? ..bobw

The short answer is,
You can’t.

40’s are for midrange and Silhouette. Even there the 45’s in conditions are tough to beat.

Thanks for all the replies. You've confirmed what I have suspected. My new scoped Borchardt project will be 45-90.
