I have a 1886 Kropatsch with an 8 shot tube mazazine in 8x60 that I am trying to get going. This is a very similar action to your 71 Mauser. The load I,m using consisting of a 245gn 8mm bullet with 75gn FFG. The cases I make from 348 Win brass.

71 mauser
I myself have been looking for a good 71 mauser. Congrats on acquiring one.
I wonder if any managed to find themselves used on the great buffalo herds. I haven't read or heard any historical refernce to any buffalo hunter using one, but it wouldn't surprise me. I had though the very same about the enfields and martini-henry's, the after recently reading a Buffalo hunting history book, I discovered one reference of the enfield in use on the Texas herd.
Good luck with your 71.
