Hello! Newb here
Hello all. Well, the 2 year wait is over, my rifle finally arrived. Shiloh Hartford 45-70, 30” heavy octagon. Long range Buffalo MVA sights.
Ok, so that was the east part. Now I’m scrambling to get together all I need to begin casting and hand loading. I have so many questions. I’m trying the search function, but all it keeps saying is my search words are too common and won’t give me any results. Am I doing something wrong?
I’m looking to find a couple castings that shoot well in the Shiloh barrel. One for smokeless, and one for black powder. I’m looking for high accuracy and long range.
Any advice for a newbie would be appreciated.
FYI I’m not new to shooting by any means, nor hand loading, but BPCR is all new.
Thanks in advance, and I’m real happy to join y’all!

ARN,
I think the customary response is "Pictures Please" (https://shilohrifle.com/forums/viewtopi ... 21#p337821). I would have a few suggestions but there are others who frequent here much better versed in Long Range so I will remain mute.
Best of luck,
Charles

Do your search using your browser off site and tag the search with shiloh forum. That's a nice looking rifle!! The forum search feature just doesn't work correctly.

How do I tag the site?
Please give me an example of how to google search something like “bullet mould” in the Shiloh Forum. I’d appreciate it!
Thanks

Congratulations!
Regarding the search function, someone else created this custom search. I've found it quite helpful.

Two bullets that work well are both from Buffalo arms the 525 gr money bullet and the original postel cast either one from 16-1

You can never read too much!
https://shopspg.net/ols/products/shooti ... -venturino
https://www.huntingtons.com/store/produ ... ctid=16164
Then PM Kenny Wasserberger on this forum and request a copy of His Book.
The same mold will work for both BP and Smokeless. You just have to find the one your rifle likes. I assume you have a 1-18" twist barrel? Twist rate will determine how long a bullet you can use. Lots of folks here know more than I do, and will be along to recommend specific molds. I believe this is the one Don recommends, and it's the one I'm getting when my .45 shows up. (Currently shoot a .50-70)

Oh, get one of these, you will need it. https://www.midwayusa.com/product/1011260595?pid=423150
And one of these https://shilohrifle.com/reloading-suppl ... drop-tube/
You probably have most everything else you need. Maybe cruise Ebay for a Belding and Mull Powder measure.

Welcome to the forum. The best advise that I can offer is to find a mentor that can help you with the 100's of questions that you will have. What state do you live in? Also going to local BPCR matches will help by watching and striking up conversations from fellow shooters.A Atwood wrote: ↑Thu Nov 17, 2022 8:54 am Hello all. Re: Hello! Newb here
I live in Ohio.
As for twist rate, they didn’t ask me what rate I wanted and so I’ll assume it’s 1:18 twist. It’s not in my paperwork that I can find yet. I’ll have to drag something through the bore and measure it myself I guess.
Thank for the info guys. The learning curve on these BPCRs is pretty steep!

Re: Hello! Newb here
From what I have read It is a well proven design in 1-18 barrels. And yes, Shilohs stock twist rate in .45 barrels is 1-18.
This is a set of tables based on the Greenhill formula https://www.montanabulletworks.com/reso ... st-tables/
Remember, it is the length of the bullet that is the critical measurement here, not the weight.
There are other formulas, and I hope others chime in with them. But this is the old classic.
