Getting ready to do my 45/70 brass. Usually full size. Anyone recommend just neck size?

What are you planning to do with this rifle? Target or field use can make a big difference.

You're right. Target. I've in the past tried both, and really for me, don't see a difference. But I'm far from an expert.
Thanks, Gary

I shoot grease groove bullets, and like some, if minimal neck tension. I neck size only enough to retain the bullet against a light tug, and anneal after every firing. Experience tells me this is what my rifle likes. You will hear as many formulas as shooters, all coming down to what the rifle itself tells them. I would start off with neck sizing, then try different variations until the holes in the paper speak to you.

And I would say you need to shoot groups at at least 200 yards. 300 Would be better. 100 yards will not create the data you need.

I only full length size brass that's new. After that I simply neck size just enough to allow cases to hold tension on my bullets.

Full length sizing brass is one way to take a load, let's say 72 grs. of powder and add compression to that load compared to 72grs. in unsized brass. The FLS brass will make the powder set up higher in the case. Yes, you can just add wads and do the same, I just said it was one way to do it. I've got 3 rifles and it has worked in each of these rifles better than unsized brass. That's just my experience, to each his own, you figure it out for your rifle.

I F/L size .45-70 in a .45-90 die.
Works the brass less and gives a great fit.

I have three different loadings and will take them to the range when this-------weather clears. I'll post the results, with my gun anyway.
