Primer wad

Post by SBR4590 »

When using BP, I've read and talked with shooters who use a primer wad, waxed paper, to make a barrier between primer and powder. Some say it allows for a more uniform flash. What's the collective wisdom of the forum?
Thanks. Frank.

Use coffee filter paper, it keeps powder from getting into the flash hole among other things. Coffee filter doesn’t leave ash.

What are the thoughts on using cigarette papers??? ie. "ZIG Zag" Size wise I find a standard loose leaf hole punch will cover the flash hole any way it lands in the bottom of the case.

Ashless, filter paper.

Punched 40 cal fit the bottom of a 45 caliber case perfectly. 38 caliber fit the bottom of a 40-70 case perfectly.

I used 45 caliber disks in the shell holder of my 38-50, as also to headspace the pistol primers.

Definitely cuts the SD, vertical @ 1 mile has been observed at 1 MOA.

What about directly under a Large Pistol Primer?

That’s what I’ve done, with great results. I use ‘standard’-weight typing paper, .035”- thick, under the primer. I like the results; smaller groups. Try both, and decide for yourself. I’ll try anything that others have found beneficial.
Every time I try to purchase the ashless paper others are using inside the cases the supplier has it marked ‘out of stock’.

Great research. Short answer: Coffee filter paper.

I didn't find it beneficial. I tried inside the primer pocket and inside the case. I have played with many different papers and finally determined it did not provide enough benefit to justify it's use. I did find unburned paper inside the primer pocket and/or inside the case even after wet tumbling with ashless filter paper. I gave it up.

I squeeze the flash hole down and seem to get the same results as using a wad. And I don't have to fiddle with putting in the wads each reload. Just do it once and it's done. The only drawback is you have to use a decapping die with a smaller pin than normal. Redding and other's offer them.
Good luck!

Again, just one more thing that a person needs to do when developing super accurate loads. It might work for you and it might not.

Thank you Woody! I am not a good enough shot to detect a difference on the target.

I also use coffee filters I buy cheap at the Dollar Tree store, and punch out with a set of hole punches I have. I can punch about 10 layers at a time, so it's easy to do a large quantity fast.
