Howdy,

I have a 50 2.5" with a barrel I had made to be closer to the original. Looking for a good starting point on loads. I had this built because the newer rifling is more suited to heavier bullets and I wanted something more traditional as this rifle is for "fun" and not competition ....

Cal: 50-2 1/2 (50-90)
Barrel Dimensions: 1 1/2 BARREL WITH A COLLAR, 30"
Barrel Twist Rate: 1 in 34 Right-Hand Twist

I wanted to say the original loading for this rifle was more in line with the British "black powder express" rounds ... and am looking for a good starting load to work from ...

Need a little more info. Are you wanting to shoot patched or naked projectiles?

Just cram 90 grains od Fg into the case and put a 450 grain bullet on top of it. That's the original load.

The original load for the sharps 50 2 1/2 was 100 grain of powder and a 473 grain pp bullet. The 90 grain load is what winchester loaded still used a 473 grain pp bullet.

I shoot a 500 BP Express double rifle. 120grains 3F Swiss with slight duplex. Lube cookies are essential for fouling control.

Gyroscopic Stability Factor for the .50 caliber:
Sg of 1.4 or less has insufficient spin and will not stabilize so for 34:1 spin you need bullets shorter than a 600 grain.
