Curtis took most of the pictures so a big THANK YOU to him. It’s the same song sung by Nathan Moore, my son-in-law, but I tried to get more competitors and their rifles into it this time. Kenny should be happy; his “Two Men and Truck to carry it” bull barrel rifle is there. Conditions were very challenging this year. You will see some jackets on the shooters and some wind on the flags. Dave Gullo is ever the optimist in the pits with a lot of black target stickies on his hand. He didn’t get to use many of them – none of us did! There is a picture of two bullet holes through the wood on the adjacent empty target frame! Dennis Armistead made the big knife so talk to him if you want a “spotter’s knife.” Gullo and Venhous might want his number.
The line in the song that says “awards are paper and there ain’t no prizes…” comes from the days after the Rhodes and USIMLT matches and before Zack Taylor took over running the matches. The “awards” were computer printed paper and there were no prizes unless you count the Jimmy John’s dropped at the Berger Building. Now it’s a lot different: my wife sewed some items for the wive’s prizes and Santa Zack put some special prizes in them, Steve Farringer made the coaster discs with the DI logo on them that’s in one of the pictures, Dennis Armistead made the Top BPTR and Top Spotter trophies – works of art. Prizes included an RCBS Easy Melt furnace, BACO bullet molds, gallons of MPro 7, and other really nice stuff. Awards – well – you can see the cups in the pictures. Don and Eddie and their wives fed us midway through over at the Rifleman’s HQ in the west campground. We had steaks on awards night in the rec building. MUCH better match than ever before. Truly the shooters putting on a great match.
So if you want to hone your skills for other matches, just shoot long range for the first time, or improve your wind skills by shooting rifleman class, come on down to the Desert International match. The number of days and the course of fire can’t be beat.
